Why High Fructose Corn Syrup is More Fattening than Sugar

Mar 24, 2009 18:05

--HFCS = a sweetener found in most sodas and many other processed foods.
--HFCS contains lots of unbound fructose
--high-fructose diet-->hypertriglyceridemia, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and insulin resistance
--fructose consumption decreases signaling to your CNS by hormones leptin and insulin
--leptin signals "satiety", so you never feel fed, you stay hungry !!!!
--fructose is converted to fat by the liver much more easily than glucose is (ie is more lipogenic)
--sugars usually go to liver and may be stored (as glycogen), burned, or turned to fat
--fructose converts into adipose and triglycerides, do not pass go, do not collect $200
--overconsumption of HFCS-->nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-->hepatic insulin resistance & type II diabetes
--IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INSULIN RESISTANCE AND "HEPATIC" INSULIN RESISTANCE?
--new diabetes diagnoses up by 90 percent in the last decade
--1/4 of all Americans are either diabetic or pre-diabetic
--rising HFCS consumption is linked to US epidemics of obesity, DM & metabolic syndrome
--the HFCS industry persists in claiming that their sweetener is just like sugar, and have studies to prove it, but they paid for those studies
--#1 source of calories in America is high fructose corn syrup in soda (approx 40g/can)
--40g is more than the AMA’s recommended daily max for ALL caloric sweeteners
--HFCS is in all kinds of processed, pre-packaged foods too, even non-sweet foods
--US use of HFCS increased 10,673% in 35 years: 1970-2005, according to USDA Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption report
--processed foods account for > 90% of US food budget
--average of 1/4 of calories consumed in US is in added sugars, mostly HFCS
--11 different carbonated soft drinks containing HFCS were tested for other chemicals
--these 11 have ‘astonishingly high’ levels of reactive carbonyls: undesirable and highly-reactive compounds assoc w/ “unbound” fructose and glucose molecules-->may cause tissue damage
--reactive carbonyls not present in table sugar, its fructose and glucose are “bound”
--reactive carbonyls elevated in blood of diabetics, linked to health complications
--1 can soda contains about 5x the concentration of reactive carbonyls than what's in the blood of an adult with diabetes (so what?)
--HFCS-->sig increase to triglycerides and LDL
--high triglycerides = heart disease risk
--HFCS is empty calories, no nutritional content whatsoever, sucks nutrients from your bod
--unbound fructose interferes w/ heart's use magnesium, copper and chromium
--whole fruit contains some fructose but it has enzymes, vitamins and minerals in it too
--HFCS almost always made from genetically modified corn
--GMO corn increases your risk of developing corn allergies

NEW GENETIC RESEARCH IN MICE:
--mice fed a high-fructose diet could be protected from insulin resistance if a gene known as transcriptional coactivator PPARg coactivator-1b (PGC-1b) was "knocked down" in the animals' liver and fat tissue
--this gene (PGC-1b) regulates the activity of several other genes, including one that builds fat in the liver
--if they start using drugs to adjust people's PGC-1b gene expression and prevent type II diabetes, they'll be missing the point that you could just stop consuming so much fructose instead of taking a drug

MORE NOTES ADDED SEPT 09
majority of HFCS made from genetically engineered corn
corn syrup that has undergone an enzymatic process to increase its fructose level
then mixed with pure corn syrup (100% glucose)-->final form
can be manipulated-->fruct=gluc, or up to 80%fruct/20%gluc
fructose ingestion increases uric acid levels-->heart disease
raises levels of lactic acid-->mb life threat at extreme levels
high sucrose diet may alter intracellular metabolism-->oxidation-->accelerate aging
rats given fructose had changes in skin collagen
fruct metabolized by the liver-->pancreas not produce normal amount of insulin
fructose converts to fat more easily than other sugars-->obesity
fructose consumption-->increased TG levels
damaging effects w/ copper deficiency, inhibits copper metabolism
poor copper metab-->anemia, CT issues, MIs, high chol, dysglycemia, thyroid disorders
see 9/5/09 post on bromides and thyroid for more, this info taken from mtn dew section
