It is good to be on vacation and slowly reading my way through the Yuletide archive. For Christmas this year, I decided to bake my grandmother's Christmas cookie recipes for my family. Pair that with the baking I normally do for holiday parties, plus some Yuletide treats that would not end, and I was quite the busy bee. My family was delighted with the cookies, including my grandmother, so hooray! Next year, maybe I'll be able to get the seven-layer bars out of the pan successfully...

A couple of nights ago, the boyfriend and I finally, FINALLY had time to see Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. We ended up going to an 11 PM show because everything in the area is still hella sold out, and I was worried about getting spoiled. So it was kind of like a midnight premiere, only with fewer costumes! Shoutout to the teenage boys in front of us, whose running previews commentary made me worried, but then they didn't make a peep as soon as the movie started.

Like so many people, I grew up watching the original trilogy. Like so many people, TFA made me feel like a little kid again. What do you mean, I can't just pop in the next VHS tape and watch Episode VIII right now?! I spent most of the movie in absolute GLEE because the new trio is just the embodiment of joy. Rey and her Jedi powers!! Finn and his darling brave heart!! Poe wasn't in the movie as much as fanart led me to believe, but he was charming and delightful. John Boyega's performance in particular just led to me going ♥________♥ at the screen a lot. NEW TRIO SAVING THE GALAXY.

TFA absolutely leans on all the same plot beats as ANH, but in a way that feels celebratory of Star Wars nostalgia instead of cynically exploiting it for money. The new trio is distinct from the old trio while still calling back to it, which I think is why it works so well. (All of the Rey-Luke parallels make me SO UNBELIEVABLY HAPPY. I want her to be a Skywalker SO BADLY, give me my complicated family space opera.) So yes, bring back the Millennium Falcon! Blow up the bigger, badder Death Star! Even kill the mentor figure if you must. *sob* I mean, as soon as Han stepped onto that catwalk, I knew he was a goner. That didn't stop me from desperately wanting him to make it, nor from clutching at my date while covering my mouth with my other hand when it happened. Han! Leia! Luke! I just want all of you to be happy.

In conclusion, this movie made me feel feelings! I laughed and I cried in all the right places and I'm looking forward to the next two episodes. I'm really curious about how Ben Solo/Kylo Ren's arc will shake out, since the redeeming power of love is such a huge part of the SW narrative. I can't wait for Rey's Jedi training! I can't wait for Finn's FACE! So many things to look forward to. *G*
