Goodness, it's been a while. I have many subjects to post on, but let's start with REMIX! I was spoiled by Remix proper and then Remix Madness.

My Remix assignee was pocky_slash. I LAUGHED ENDLESSLY. After years of doing fic exchanges, I was assigned a friend at last! When she messaged me to talk about Remix, I panicked and said I was writing for bessiemaemucho rather than sensibly saying I was writing for someone she didn't know in a fandom she didn't know! As I said on Twitter, I went to the Gladys Witham school of spies. The end result was that I wrote Kait a remix, then sent a panicked e-mail to the mods asking if I could post the fake remix I started. The end result is that I have two stories in the main archive and I also wrote four Remix Madness ficlets! THE LIST:

kids who go to school (the drop the dime remix) (7506 words) by littledust
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Pietro Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff, Erik Lehnsherr, Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, Raven | Mystique
Additional Tags: Post-Beach, Darwin is Alive, Kid Fic, Canon Disabled Character, Families of Choice, Parenthood
Summary: Pietro, Wanda, Erik, and the lessons they learn.

I spent an enjoyable better part of a Saturday rereading Kait's fic. The two strongest contenders for remixing were write this number down, because I love how seamlessly she worked the twins into canon and how Charles and Erik reconciled through them. The other main contender was rooms/shares, another recent fic of hers that I LOVE. Ultimately, I didn't go with that one because Kait's told me there's a lot going on with Charles in that fic that we don't see because of the Erik POV, and I didn't want to contradict canon. (Yes, yes, I know I was allowed to remix just what was there, and also that Remix isn't a gift exchange, but I WANTED my story to be a gift.)

My original outline included all of the X-kids and was structured similarly to A Cup of Sugar, because Kait and I both like reading and writing about little slices of life at mutant school. Only the parts with Pietro and Wanda (their first scenes in the actual fic) were working, so I reread the fic. I wanted it to be about the kids and the school, since so much of Charles and Erik's reconciliation is Erik realizing that mutant guerrilla warfare is no life for children. Then I realized that duh, if that's what the remix is about, I could just focus on Wanda and Pietro, plus pull in Erik's POV because I really wanted to write the scene at the end. (More on that in a bit.)

Once I narrowed the focus, everything sort of fell into place. I found myself developing Pietro feelings, because his annoying behavior is a lot more understandable coming from a seven-year-old. Kids his age want to be the fastest and the best, and if they grow up as the fastest, they're not shy about letting people know. Pietro's first scene is a frightening glimpse into what growing up in a secret mutant guerrilla base might look like, and I just loved his second scene. Charles is like, "I, too, know the BURDEN of being a GENIUS." Charles, never change. ♥ I think Pietro is growing to understand that other kids don't like him much--seven is around the age very egocentric kids start noticing--and hopefully growing up in a school will do him some good.

I just loved writing Wanda's scenes. The first one was all happy mutant kids playing baseball, which is right up my alley. I definitely wanted to write about Wanda developing some control over her powers, because causing bad luck without conscious thought would be pretty damn frightening to a little kid. That formed the basis for the second scene--Wanda takes her feeling of acceptance from that day and turns it into her own point between rage and serenity. ♥ I loved sneaking a wry little comment from Wanda's POV about Erik being in denial about teaching at the school, even though he's completely incapable of ignoring a mutant child struggling with their powers. Some of my favorite fics from the earliest days of XMFC fandom mention that Erik is best at teaching the mutants who are angry and afraid. Wanda isn't angry, but she's definitely terrified. It was nice to give her a win. ♥

The first Erik scene helps establish the rift between him and Mystique (which is obvs important for the last scene), and also features him finally getting a clue that his children deserve an actual childhood. Let's not count how many times the Brotherhood HQ had to get attacked before he came to this realization. The idea for the second scene hit me while I was tweaking the original remix outline--what a great way to come full circle, if I ended my remix with another reconciliation and another child (eventually) joining the school. DoFP makes it obvious that Mystique is a ridiculously competent guerrilla mutant activist. I wanted her still out in the world, but I wanted her to be able to return to the school if need be. Love for their children drive Erik and Mystique back to the school, which is really the only safe haven for mutant children. Charles and Mystique get to clear the air (Charles! he doesn't even enter the room until Mystique says it's okay--he's grown, too) and this time it's Erik who talks about the purpose of the school and what it's come to mean to him as well.

Basically, ♥FAMILY♥.

(Also, I spent right up until Kait first recced the fic panicking that somehow I had forgotten years of teaching children and had the voices wrong? I don't even know, man.)

Life Finds a Way (The Lost World Mix) (4817 words) by littledust
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Breaking Bad
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson/Logan (X-Men), Nick Fury/Moira MacTaggert
Characters: Moira MacTaggert, Nick Fury, Raven | Mystique, Bruce Banner, Jesse Pinkman, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Logan (X-Men)
Additional Tags: Dinosaurs
Summary: Shortly after finding out that renowned scientist Bruce Banner and grad student Jesse Pinkman have gone off the grid, reports of dinosaurs washing up on Costa Rican beaches find their way to the CIA. Nick and Moira know the man they need to mount their rescue mission.

I remixed Renata's excellent fic for me as my FAKE DECOY REMIX. Nothing delights me more than writing for bessiemaemucho because it is a license to be COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS. Do I want Jesse Pinkman and Bruce Banner sharing a sadness cave on a lost dinosaur island? Great. Does The Rock end up stranded on the island because he wanted to film a dinosaur documentary? Sure. Is... Raven going to get an actual emotional arc about realizing her brother cares more about her than a potential cure for paralysis? YES. This fic was loads of fun to write. My only regret is that the time crunch meant I could not actually write a scene in which Jesse rescues a baby T-Rex.

this is not a true love song (the typesetter's remix) (269 words) by littledust
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Erik Lehnsherr
Summary: Erik's letters grow more sentimental in his old age.

I wanted to write
metonymy a present for betaing my main Remix for me, so NOIR PASTICHE IT WAS. I thought it would be ~deeply suspicious~ if I didn't write Kait anything for Madness. Luckily, random inspiration struck! I wanted a Western AU, and I wanted Charles and Erik to be working in something evolution-related, and then I read about the BONE WARS and two RIVAL PALEONTOLOGISTS WHO WERE ONCE BOSOM COMPANIONS, and the ficlet just... wrote itself. I didn't even make it about dinosaurs on purpose!

I wrote Junk Food (The Chex Party Mix) 95% for the pun in the subtitle and 5% because I can never get enough Clint/Natasha. Okay, maybe the percentages are a little less skewed than that, but I laughed A LOT at my own cleverness. I just loved the original atmosphere in this is not a true love song that I wanted to do a little bit from an older Erik's POV. Old (Almost) Retired Dudes in Love write sentimental love letters. ♥

Man, Remix was SUCH A GOOD TIME this year. A+ would remix again!
