"Fast Food"

Scene: New York during the Second World War

One of the characters in the novel I am currently working on is the head of an organised crime syndicate, who also owns several coffee shops and fast food restaurants in the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia), and by the mid-1950s he owns an entire chain merging both both across America. It's a caricature of global fast-food franchises like McDonalds.

Was "fast food" in common parlance in America in the 1940s, or "take-out"?
