Quick initial thoughts on TVD 3x01 The Birthday
Just a quick note, before I read most of my friends reactions ...
Yay, my show is back :)
I loved where the show took Ripper Stefan and Paul did an awesome job portraying him. The facial expression and the things that he did had me squicky and squeamish and just plain scared of him. And American accent Klaus??? It actually took me a few seconds to realize it was Klaus.
Stefan was also awesome when he convinces Klaus to deal with Damon and was a little over-convincing to get his point across to him. I love the brother dynamic with these two. I could see Stefan's concern for Damon - buried, but still there. Also, Stefan calling Elena was a lovely, powerful scene. Kudos to both Paul and Nina for great performances.
That moment led me to feeling that the show is finally treating the triangle more to my liking. I'm more easily invested in it as Stefan's absence and Damon's presence counterbalance each other with regards to Elena. Yes, Elena is in love with Stefan, but she's also much more accepting of Damon than she was.
It was great that Damon was tracking Klaus without telling Elena. It's true to his character that he would protect her any way he can. Also, giving her back the necklace Stefan gave her is once again showing how he always considers what will make Elena happy. He's giving her something to hold onto. Plus, him standing behind her with his fingers just slightly lingering by her neck was lovely and their trademark chemistry was certainly there to behold.
Now onto my poor bb Damon. Once again, his life circumstances suck. He's worried and feeling guilty about Stefan (although he'd never admit it), not happy that Stefan is causing Elena so much pain and strife, and had to watch his distraction, Andie, get killed by said brother. I was impressed that he chose to wreck Stefan's room in reaction (instead of going on a murderous rampage). He's definitely showing signs of growth (which I love).
Loved the Damon/Alaric bromance continuing. I feel for Alaric mourning Jenna but being thrust into the role-model role.
Caroline and Tyler were hawt together (but then Caro is hot no matter what she's doing IMO).
Carol Lockwood shooting my bb Caroline with funky vervain darts >>>> Not Cool, but a good cliffhanger to end the episode on.
