This answer has been in my head since I first read the question. The main source of my anger in this scene is Bonnie. I get that she's had a lot of drama to deal with lately, but her first reaction to Caroline's actions is to take it out on Damon (with lethal force, I might add).
Causing him immeasurable pain, then lighting him on fire was just cruel. Especially when you consider that Bonnie's choice to feed Caroline vampire blood played a part in her turning. Bonnie is still pissed when Elena physically stops her from flat out killing Damon, which just shows how intent she was on finishing the job.
Thank heavens Elena, freshly wounded from Damon's attack on her brother, can still keep her wits about her and convince Bonnie that killing others is not the way to handle this situation. That speaks a great deal to her strength of character and loyalty to all her friends.
