I'm currently teaching English as an Additional language to kids and it bothers me how uniform the examples/pictures are. The most diversity that every shows up in books is people of different countries/ethnicities. That's to say, everybody is straight, able bodied, etc ( Read more... )

The other day I was watching a documentary about the Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. For anyone who isn't aware of it, it's a classic children's book, where the majority of the characters and the events are created from taking common English idioms very literally. I'm going to be tutoring a 12-year-old kid in English and I'm looking for some texts that might be suitable for that. The texts would need to be fun, memorable, creative, and preferably short. So, I just today found out that this exists.  It's the good old Language Construction Kit from Zompist, only... in print. And expanded. And rewritten, apparently?

The LCK  is one of the few resources I've seen that seems like it might work for me at least in terms of basic linguistics stuff. I'm just curious - has anybody tried the print version? ( Read more... )
