Review: "The World Ends With You"

System: Nintendo DS
Developr: Square-Enix and Jupiter
Genre: Action-RPG

This game is seriously life-changing. Honestly, it is one of the most insightful and mentally stimulating games I have ever played. It is truly a work of art, and while I say that often for video games, I believe that any other person who appreciates electronic media would have to agree with me.

While it's not an RPG in the way that Zelda or Final Fantasy is, The World Ends With You (Japanese title: "It's a Wonderful World") offers the counterbalance to our own world, instead of a fantasy one. It takes place in an "anti-reality" overtop Modern-day Shibuya Station in Tokyo, where a gaggle of seemingly unrelated people are forced to play a game for a group of authoratative figures called the "Reapers." The penalty for failure? Erasure from existance itself. No pressure, though. The game is comprised of multiple missions; one a day for 7 days. Each usually has to do with relation to the "Noise," a physical (sort of) manifestation of the negative thoughts and feelings of human beings physcially in Shibuya.

The battle system uses both screens at once in a new way. Instead of having each screen display a different aspect of the same situation, each screen is basically a different battle, each happening simulataneously and controlled by the player equally. This is where the ADHD shine, since this game demands constant-attention-shifting. In all honesty, it seems daunting, but you will quickly become seriously addicted to the heart-racing pace of the fights.

As stated earlier, for people that enjoy plot twists and intellectual stimulus with their constant mind-revving, then TWEWY will deliver splendidly. I wish I could tell you more, but ANYTHING past day 1 would ruin huge pieces of story for you that is just too good to pass up.

All in all, this game is a must-buy for any DS owner, and a good game to consider in the purchase of the system, as it utilizes the concept extraordinarily.
