I got word today that my favorite writing teacher, my mentor and friend, Ron Forsythe passed away over the weekend. The news wasn't surprising. A lifelong cigar-smoker, he'd developed emphysema years ago. What was surprising, was just how hard the news hit me, how deeply sad I felt in that moment when I read the words in the email.

I got 47 words written today. Here's hoping I can up my average over the weekend.

Well, I'm going to give it one more try. This November, I plan to complete a draft of a novel in 30 days. I haven't had any luck with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) over the last few years, so I'm hoping that this year provides fewer distractions and I can actually get at least one complete novel out of this old brian before it ossifies.
