My oldest brother, Bob, would have turned 62 today if he hadn't taken his own life when he was 19. I learned that my cousin Frances died in a car accident on Saturday. She was 68.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself from posting this ABC News piece about Barack Obama's grandmother. It makes me miss my own stubborn, bossy, liberal-as-the-day-is-long grandmother who gave me so much of the stuff that makes me who I am today. Don't watch if you're feeling at all fragile and you don't need a good cry.

First: Today was my (favorite) niece's 21st birthday. I called her & wished her a happy day. I wish we lived closer so I could have taken her out for dinner and drinks. Short of that, I got to talk to her and let her know how proud I am to be the aunt and the friend of the wonderful woman she has become.

Okay, this is pretty flagrant, but I think my sister's necklaces and hand-made soaps are just fabulous. She's started selling stuff on eBay.
