Early, when the world is still asleep

So, I woke up just a little after 5 this morning to go to the bathroom. I didn't bother turning on the light. So I was truly surprised when the room brightened quite suddenly as if someone were in the back yard taking photos with a flash. Then I heard the rumble of thunder.

I watched the eastern sky from the bathroom window for the next 20 minutes or so. Each bright pop and crackle of lightning was followed by another roll of thunder. The house was still hot, as was the air outside. Then, I heard the leaves rustling softly as the breeze kicked up.

Satisfied that rain was on the way, I went back to bed, but found I couldn't get back to sleep. Instead, I came downstairs, made a cup of coffee and finished reading a novel I've been meaning to read forever. I opened the windows downstairs to let some air move through the house. By the time I finished the book, the sun was up and the house felt cool.

I've been piddling around online for a few hours now. Maybe it's time for breakfast.
