ATLANTIS RESEARCH STATION

I volunteered to rebuild the shed that had been destroyed by the recent tornado. the roof had been devoured by termites as had one entire wall, and both of those had largely disintegrated in the storm. the front wall had its door ripped off and had slipped its sill off its foundation and twisted apart. so what they gave me to work with was a two and a half walled shed that was colapsing inward with a tarp thrown over it. i told them i wanted to do a plywood and tarpaper roof instead of tin, and wanted to fix the sills and rebuild the missing wall. then they gave me a shit ton of wood and somehow i got talked in to including skylights in it. i wanted to put in a loft bed cuz it was gonna be my living space for 2 months. once i roughed out the loft be i got inspired to add a "second floor" just for fun. also the grail was working on a tree house project, and the upperclass neighbour hood that grail was in objected so hard and heavy to the tree house that i was given extra encouragement to build whatever excess i felt like as a fuck you to the neighbours. and then somebuddy donated shingles and tar paPER AND SKYLIGHTS THET WERE A DIFFERENT SIZE THEN I thoguth the were gonna be.

the shed, named atlantis research station, after that it was my experimental house project far away from my own home that sat in legal limbo for 2 months, was built with about 120 hours of work mostly by me alone but with mostly unskilled but seriously tight carpentry help from mulberry, rocket, and ritard, and some excellent skilled roofing assistance from whiskey. total budget for the shed was something like $12 but it could have been less. i bought a new keyhole saw just but wound up using the grails more often. the nails were donated and or shoplifted, the wood came from dumpsters, an abandoned factory, and swiped out of contruction sites and picked up from a porch that was destroyed by the tornado. the roofing materials came from neighbours who didnt hate us.

unfortunatly atlantis research station was never properly finished. i myself was trying to draw the job out as long as possible so i could do experiments with finish carpentry and joinery and nit pick or perfectionisting my design. then my schedual got filled up with packing and picking up donations to the rockaway mississippissippi boat project. i was spending 16 or more hours a day moving supplies for the boat. any time i hgad a day off, it would rain making work on the shed impossible.

also once the "second floor" went up the neighbours went insane, even screaming at us while we worked. they called the mutherfucking police on 3 occasions and had the police come stare at us while we did roofing. finally i got my own house back and had to rush in to imediate renovations on my barn like 24 room condemned mansion while whiskey got kicked off the roof by a government man serving a stop work order.

shown here is a clever concession we made to a screaming neighbour who took a bunch of digital pis of us working. she said we'd be violating code by modifying the roofline of an existing structure and by building right on the property line and that our new construction would drain on her old construction. so i improvised a built in to the roof gutter system that channeled water off the "second floor" on to the first and forward in to grail's yard.

that didnt stop her from screaming at me even when i pointed out all the extra work i did for her.

so the atlantis base sits just shy of completion with a stop work on the fence. also soembuddy stole my cordless drill from the job site. my only care is that i never really got to enjoy living in the atlantis, and i built it for myself after all. but tis my hope that grail gets to keep this house and do more work on the property and this shed can get used by kids.

also it was intended to be my portpholio peice for my rethinking the house/ spaces for livning project... its incomplete but it shows alot of what i can do and taught me a bunch of stuff.

it needs to be finnished its roofing, and then it needs two windows finished in and thats pretty much all thats left to do. hershal asked me to drywall it but thats the least of my interests. i ment to do electricity for it also.

in a light work weekeend i could finish it, but its stuck like this cuz of the stop work order. the administration of the grial collective have gone on to the boat so i ahve no support for the project besides some breif voice mails telling me to clean and secure the grail and shut it down.

so this is my test project for my larger project i'm working on, which is to work building tiny size houses with minimal materials and be able to sort of balance doing the entire project myself with inviting any buddy who wants to work on it regardless of skill background pitch in. I'm interested in working on projects like this with any buddy whos aquiring land or working on Back to the land militant wingnut projects, queer collective farmers, country squatters, alternative architects, punk rawk scum bag constrction projects, and/or anybuddy who wants to pay me to do this. my minimum requirements are some sort of electricity, food and lodging during the project (or equivalent in money) and help collecting materials (or equivalent in money).

i have my own tools that occupies about 6 cu feet of space and weigh 80 lbs. antarctic research station was built mostly with just the following.
