never
5. What's the farthest from home you've travelled within your *own* country? (May be a duplicate of #1 for some people)
St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. In the continental US, it was Key West, FL (1300 miles away). Houston TX and Bangor ME tied for second with about 1100 miles each.

1. any of the Alpine States
2. England (specifically the art galleries in London)
3. the French Riviera
8. What was the BEST travel/vacation experience of your childhood?
Probably our trip to Ontario. It was such a varied experience -- from seeing Shakespearean theatre in Stratford to taking a train to Moosonee because there were no more roads that far north. Also I loved Assateague Island VA, with the wild ponies.
9. What was the WORST travel/vacation experience of your childhood?
I'm sure it involved my mother's complaining and her way of making everyone around her tense and unhappy.
10. What was the BEST travel/vacation experience of your adulthood thus far?
Greece. Specifically, walking up a long steep terraced street in Athens with taverns at every level, stopping for wine here and there, and emerging at the top to find myself at the foot of the Acropolis. It was nighttime and the ruins were all lit up.
11. What was the WORST travel/vacation experience of your adulthood thus far?
Being sick in Salzburg and spending the night in a hospital.
12. Describe something strange you saw or encountered on your travels -- your choice of a person, place, or event. (Name both domestic and foreign, if applicable)
In Greece, I saw a couple who had pulled their car half off the road and half onto a pedestrian sidewalk, and they were enthusiastically having sex right there in the vehicle, in plain sight. In America I'm sure someone would have arrested them.
13. If you were forced to move permanently to another country on another continent, which would you choose?
Switzerland. Enlightened people, gorgeous mountains, chocolate, cheese. Why am I not there right now?
14. If you could have a vacation getaway home anywhere in your own country, where would it be?
In the mountains, in western NC.
15. If you could choose one famous person, living or dead, to travel the world with -- who would it be and why? (You would not be lovers with this person, so please exclude choices based on sexiness.)
Oscar Wilde. Hilarious, intelligent, and beauty-loving all at the same time.
