One half of the Grindhouse double feature was released this week. I was really sad that I missed it in theaters, so I was really excited to rent it. The Grindhouse movies were sort of short, so this movie was beefed up to nearly two hours. Personally, I really want to see the original, because this version just seemed slow and bloated. I could see how a shorter version might be really awesome to me, but it feels like they just pumped in a lot of sitting around and talking to get it to feature-length. Anyone who knows me well knows that I like my action movies to be balls-to-the-wall action...and this just wasn't that. But if the original movie cut some of that talking out, I can see myself really enjoying it. I was also left kind of wanting with the ending.
I'm wondering what happened with Lee while the other girls were gone. And did they end up having to buy the car, because it was basically trashed at the end of the movie? The special features kind of blew as well, which made me wonder just where the Grindhouse previews were that originally tethered Planet Terror to Death Proof. Perhaps they're saving them for a release of the two movies together. I certainly hope so. I do have to say that I loved how stylized the movie was. It definitely felt like it could have been one of those Grindhouse movies of the past. I may not always end up loving Quentin's films, but I do enjoy that he actually puts himself out there and is always trying something different and a little risky.
The preview of Planet Terror on this disc made me extra excited to see that. Here's hoping.
