Castle. *sigh*. Definitely one of my top two shows on tv right now. But let's get down to business, shall we?
Season 2:
Let's start with the Cons:
Stana Katic is a phenomenal actress, has awesome language skills, and has morphed into every roll I've seen her in, but the last episode (ep.5 When the Bough Breaks) got a bit over the top when it came to the book discussion. Obviously Beckett is a fan, she's embarrassed by that fact and wants to hide it, but when their book release party conversation degenerated to huffy exclamations of "Fine!" you know something went wrong on the creative end. One side of my brain liked it. The other half screamed, "Oh please, no! Tell me you did not just do that." Their banter is usually so sharp and witty. To have it reduced to such a low caliber cliché was just sad.
Besides that, I have only one other complaint: Esposito and what's his name. You know who I'm talking about. That guy...and that other guy. My point exactly. Who are these guys? They have no distinct personality traits. I even had to look up Det. Kevin Ryan's name (Yeah. Kevin Ryan. No wonder I couldn't remember it). Why did they create two characters when they share all of the same lines, duties, and desk space, and walk around like they're handcuffed to each other? The point of view still needs to be Castle's, with his family and his partnership with Beckett taking center stage, but the Siamese twins need to undergo surgery. Even the Three Stooges have separate personalities. These two are like Huey and Dewey, minus the Louie. Their identity crises aren't too distracting since they're currently part of the scenery, but that can only last so long.
On to the Pros:
Focus is still on the crime and investigative work (vs. a total relationship tidal wave). The crimes on this show have been interesting, a bit odd or extreme sometimes, but not in an intentionally gory or that-could-never-happen-in-real-life kind of way. And I love Castle's dramatic "mystery motive could be X, Y, or Z" speeches. Always entertaining.
Beckett/Castle/precinct banter is still fresh and snappy (excepting the aforementioned). I would even say it makes me chuckle or burst into laughter rather than fangirlie giggles, which is a definite plus.
Loved the season premier. It highlighted the crazy-fun celebrity side of Castle as well as the practical, deep, real center of the Castle/Beckett partnership. Castle's honest no-excuse apology to Beckett gave the episode the solid base it needed, just as their pain-sharing conversations did last season. His lighthearted, spunky family also meets its perfect match with heart-to-heart discussions, arguments, and confessions at home. Nothing can beat their family dynamics.
Castle: Unemployed diva's who live in glass houses rent free should not throw stones.
Martha: Point taken.
I also enjoy the medical examiner.
Beckett: How's it going up there?
M.E.: I've got tree branches pokin' my boobs and spotlights shining up my booty.
Esposito: Could be worse. You could be wearing a skirt.
M.E.: When I come down, I'm gonna smack you.
Like I said. Love the show.
