White Collar

I knew virtually nothing going into the show, but when Matt Bomer's face appeared on my Hulu.com screen, I clicked on the episode eagerly and I wasn't disappointed. I'm not sure what it was that pulled me in, but "White Collar" had me hooked from the very opening scene. Caffrey's (Bomer's) smooth, confident, and rather lighthearted demeanor under pressure created a subtle excitement that lingered throughout the episode, and I found it hard not to like him despite his felony-riddled past and present. Admittedly, I think I prefer this character to his Bryce Larkin on "Chuck," though he was 100% awesome goodness on that show, died a hero and all, rather than his currently murky self on "White Collar."

The FBI, and various other G-men, get a lot of flack for being duped by criminals in this pilot, but I suppose that's mostly a way of setting up the intellectual status quo, thus enhancing our opinion of the two main detectives and their quarry. In any case, I felt that the head FBI agent was believable, especially his incredulous reaction to Caffrey's pleas and antics, and I particularly enjoyed their somewhat contentious exchanges. My fave:

Stokes: That was harsh, I didn't mean that.
Caffrey: Yeah, you did.

Stokes: What am I going to do?
Caffrey: Nope. No more relationship advice from this side of the car. Call Doctor Phil.

Great pilot! Hope the rest hold the bar. *crosses fingers*
