*spoiler warning*
Episode four "Lancelot and Guinevere" had my mind spinning in circles (or more accurately, in triangles).
Lancelot had his usual morally sound, romantic heroism going on, but I wasn't as struck with his charm this time around. I just re-watched season one's "Lancelot" episode, which had me squealing in fan-girlie joy, so my hero-vision may be a bit blurred right now, but ever since I started seeing Arthur's honorable intentions developing towards Gwen, I've been sitting in Arthur's cheering section. She brings out the sweetest, most adorable side of him, I just can't help loving him for it.
Guinevere herself only captures me when she (a) blurts out exactly what she's thinking and then has to back track and/or (b) reveals her noble, rough, tough, save the world side. She has the sweetness and innocence that the show needs to counteract Morgana's in-your-face strength, but her place in the epic love triangle has me reeling. I was shocked that the writers jump started the Arthur/Gwen romance so early in season two - the second episode, no less! It made me *squee*, but I was worried because Gwen took so quickly to Lancelot last year and those looks were quite different from the ones she was sending Arthur's way. Props to Angel!
Gwen is profoundly connected to Arthur by his not-so-hidden chivalry, and I'm not talking the polite, kiss-your-hand, Lancelot suaveness, I mean the deep down moral code that shines through his arrogance (a code of honour which, admittedly, Lancelot also possesses). But her reaction to Arthur's affections is clearly confusion, like she's not sure she can reciprocate. She knows she shouldn't (see royal court scene expressions at the end of ep2), but there are some hints that she never felt that way about Arthur. (e.g. She was clearly surprised when he told her about his feelings.) She respects him, definitely. She loves his leadership qualities, but love has yet to enter the arena. At the moment she seems to be mad at Arthur. Did you see the look she gave him when he said he only came because Morgana begged him? OMG. Yeah. The arrogant pig has not yet left the castle.
To be honest, those observations made me want to slap Lancelot when he said, "I will not come between them." Noble sentiment, but where is your head, man? Did she not just declare her undying love for you and kiss you goodbye? I say to you: what.ever. Maybe that's why I prefer Arthur. Lancelot's too nice, too complacent. Arthur sizzles. For goodness sake, Gwen throws her heart at his feet, he does likewise, he's going to his death and Lancelot still has to wait to be kissed! Arthur goes in for the kill.
In theory, if Gwen really is a sweet, noble creature and she eventually becomes queen, she will never cheat with Lancelot. Instead, Arthur's love for her, and his other better qualities, will slowly draw her to him until the day she realizes she is completely in love with him. Then they'll live happily ever...after Uther conveniently drops dead. In any case, we will see what we shall see.
P.S. I loved the Merlin/Arthur scenes! I think my favorite scene this week was when they're washing off in the river.
Arthur [thoughtful]: Gaia berries work.
Merlin: You didn't know if they worked?
Arthur: Not for sure.
Merlin: Now you tell me?...Oh, what's that Wildren eating? 's all right. It's just Merlin.
ROTFL
Arthur smiles.
SQUEE! *giggles hysterically*
*faints*
