I heard a bunch of happiness abounds regarding Obama appointing a CTO. Why do we need a computer technology leader? Seems to me we need a "chief engineer". An engineer who will figure out how to compete with other countries on the many levels they are beating us at right now. Think resource extraction. There are many industries hurting now, and computer technology is just one of them. What about a better way to grow wood? Or a better way to mine silver or copper? How about better use of robotics to help industry, try to make them cheaper. These are the things we need to beat the developing countries! Developing countries are using resources, experimenting with bleeding edge robotics. . and often these things are hurting the environment. And they do it at a lower cost than we can.
How can the US get resources at low cost? That to me is a better use of government money than a computer technology position.
