heart astir in the moonlight

Today I got a beautiful new book about Princess Mononoke, full of storyboards and screenshots and concept art for the film. It also has a lot of picture captions that quote dialogue translated from the original Japanese language translation into English (i.e. not the Neil Gaiman adaptation) so I'm now able to see a little of what changed between the versions, which makes me happy.

Also, in it I found out an interesting fact about San's mask. It's an earthenware mask called a 'domen', and the first version you see of it actually gets shattered when San is shot at by the Tatara musketeers. It would be interesting to try and achieve an earthenware look for the cosplay ... or as close as I could get using papier mache.

I was blown away by the backgrounds and scenery in the film, so having all the concept art and design sketches laid out in book form is like a visual feast for me. I will feed on it and my drawing hand will get strong with inspiration!!

Sorry. Feeling lyrical because Rach is playing The Shins in the kitchen, and because of the words in the book.

"I love you, Ashitaka, but I cannot forgive human beings."

"That's all right. Let's live together in peace."

I'm such a romantic. I love the characters of San and Ashitaka and their relationship. I want to say more than that, but I can't without sounding too clumsy about it.

*loves on the film*

The book also has lots of poems at the beginning by Hayao Miyazaki, about all the different characters and the forest. I feel like I could live in this book for weeks!!

/hyperbole

Can you tell I'm a bit obsessed with this film?

Anyway - YAY for more San-cosplay inspiration!!! Hurrah!!
