*hugs forever* I really wish I could help more than that, because I know depression stinks and isn't easy, though mine is very fitful so I don't even know what you're going through. I really wish there was something I could do, even though we don't know one another very well.
On the Tony Harris thing, I'd echo your "fuck him" statements; as being a relatively unattractive women myself, and having been subjected to the whole nerd Inquisition thing (and for fucks sake, it's really bad in the Magic: the Gathering play groups...) I can certainly feel you on that point.
Anyways, if there's anything I can do, or you ever need/want to talk, I'm pretty much always available. (And all of my contact information is in my profile.)
Thank you very much, I appreciate it :) *hugs* It really does help just to know that people care. Things go up and down, and tonight I've been a bit down, but overall I've been in an upward trend, so that's good. But thank you, your offer is very kind! :)
Yeah, there was a time when I thought of nerd hobbies as a relatively safe space, but in recent years the misogyny's either gotten worse or become a lot more open. Maybe the openness is a good thing, a prelude to solving the problem, but it really makes me feel uncomfortable as things are now. And my goodness, there certainly are a lot of dudes who wouldn't win any beauty contests who scream at women for being fat or ugly.
you are not ugly. I've seen pictures of you and you rock. You're gorgeous, let no one tell you otherwise.
Screw the haters. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. And if you did, you'd floor them all because you're the most comic-knoweldgable person I know. You're the Rogues' queen on the web.
Fuck the haters. If you want to cosplay as Lisa, do it - you'd do an amazing job. And it would only be in character if you'd kick (and do worse) people.
I appreciate that, but I don't think there's any denying it. I'm plain on a good day, and straight up ugly on bad ones. And yeah, quite a few people have gone out of their way to tell me that.
But thank you very much, I appreciate the support :) I might do it, it depends on how confident I feel. There's a fairly good chance I might just stick with Roscoe or other male characters, because I don't have to be pretty to dress as them. It's more acceptable to be plain when you're dressed as a guy, and there's less likely to be nasty comments. I don't like letting these people win, but I like being bullied even less.
nope, you're not ugly. And people telling you you were (assholish behavior, inexcusable) does not make it so. If I called you Bugs Bunny everyday for 10 years, would you magically turn into a talking rabbit? nope.
you just have to channel your inner lisa, the hbic. she wouldn't care what anyone say, be awesome, be smug and the most badass badass in the room. don't let others get you down.
Well, we'll see. It'd definitely be fun and different, although I'm not sure I can mimic her confidence and flirtatiousness. I liked that the Lisa cosplayer in Boston draped herself over the Roscoe cosplayer -- and once he was gone, she hung off pretty much any other male cosplayer nearby, even leaving lipstick marks on Booster Gold's cheek :>
People that call other people ugly are shallow, insecure, and are the truly ugly ones. You are a beautiful person, Lia. You've made me feel special countless times. It doesn't matter if you look like a super model if you have the personality of a wet rag. I've never met a person beautiful on the outside and the inside. Personally, I'm much happier being a butt-ugly angel ;)
If you want to be Golden Glider, than DO IT! If anyone makes fun of you, they'll have to get through the other Rogues (Dave and I), first :P And no one messes with us...we're a tag team of awesome! And random movie quotes...but mostly awesome!
Yeah, I agree that people who put down others' appearance are assholes for sure -- doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong, though. I'd rather be a nice person than a beautiful one, but still don't like getting picked on for how I look. Years of bullying at school taught me to keep my head down in certain situations -- cosplaying at all was a fairly big step for me, but I went as a male character for a reason (well, that and he's my favourite :> But Lisa's my second-favourite.)
Anyway, I appreciate your support, thank you :) I guess we'll see how much (if any) confidence I can scrounge up.
Even before Harris' nonsense I've seen a lot of people make fun of cosplayers they think of as not so great...I'm way more sensitive than I ought to be, so I worry about getting made fun of :\
I pirate a few titles, but that's it. Most I can't even be bothered to pirate even though I know exactly where to get direct links. I dropped the last titles I was buying' I probably won't buy anything DC again until they bring back Roscoe or revert the Flashverse.
Harris is definitely a douche. I knew that already, but the stuff he said still hurts (and I think it's actively harmful to women in comics fandom, because it brings out the "You said it!" guys and gives legitimacy to their crap).
You could be right about things being out of whack :\ Certainly when the cycle is erratic it makes sense that other things could be erratic too, I dunno. And thank you, I greatly appreciate that *hugs*
Yeah, I'd actually been planning to write something in that vein (and still might), but was waiting until it didn't feel quite so raw. That wound hasn't healed yet :\
I have a fic still at the editing stage about them getting married -- written pretty much in defiance of the New 52 :P But that one still needs some work yet. I'll be posting a different one in a few hours, probably (set in the Dillonsverse). Hopefully that'll help cheer you up.
The funny thing about some of these guys is that if you make it clear you're female, they say you're just looking for attention. If you don't make your gender clear, they assume you're male and then assume there are no geek girls.
