It was awkward.

Seriously awkward. Donghae just didn’t know if he should laugh every time Yoona gave funny comments and every time her sister trying to stop her from getting more food.

Sunye was there for God sake. He was trying his best to look cool because he was afraid he might hurt her.
But he failed. He might hurt her when he laughed so hard over Yoona’s witty comments. He might hurt her every time Yoona made up story to his little cousins about the dragon that live in front of the gate, telling them the reason of her long absence in their house was because the dragon breathes fire every time she tried to walk pass it (He knew too his cousins won’t buy the story but they had fun interpreting Yoona’s imagination).

And it really felt like Christmas.

With REAL happiness.

Donghae smiled just thinking about it.

But now the awkwardness won’t alleviate as the three of them walk side by side towards the park nearby.
Walking side by side with Yoona and Sunye was harder than he thought it would be. How can try to be closer to Yoona without making Sunye jealous? Is that even possible?

“I’ll go and catch up with the kids” Yoona said excusing herself. It was obvious to anyone who can see that Yoona was having a cold feet and the aura of strangeness creeping slowly around her that made her facial expression changed.

Not that Donghae is a psychic but he just knew her too well to understand her facial expression. And lately everything he saw on her during their childhood keep on surfacing.

Which made him happy.

And Donghae did not stop her from coming after the kids. They were too excited to see the Christmas fireworks in the park made them run ahead of the three guardian who were supposed to be on a lookout for them.

And his three cousins could be hyperactive when they choose to be, which made them sometimes hard to take care. So Donghae would be thankful to Yoona who is an expert when it comes to kids. Kids love her naturally.
And he needed this time to talk with Sunye.

Donghae clutched his neck, thinking of the stringing the words together so it would be a perfect sentence to break the ice.

“I..” both of them said.

And they chuckled. It was funny.

As far as Donghae could remember, they never concurrently speak. Sunye would know if Donghae wanted to speak and likewise, Donghae would get the cue if Sunye wanted to say something.

And suddenly he realized that the connection was gone.

In just a few months.

“You first” Donghae said, politely and full of manner which made Sunye gave him a very beautiful smile he had long to see.

“I would like to thank you for inviting me over for the dinner.”

“No big deal. My aunt still…” he was having a lump on his throat before he could blurt out “…she still has no clue that we have broke up”

“No wonder she was hinting about getting married after we finish school”

Donghae carved a nervous smile upon his face. He didn’t really want to talk about marriage with Sunye. It hurts. Still.

“and Donghae” Sunye halted her step, making Donghae stop too.

They looked into each other’s eyes. Unlike before, he could see nothing in her eyes anymore. And his heart just did not beat crazily like before when their eyes met. The weather is getting colder and so did their heart.

“Sometimes, what you are looking for is never far from you”

He would like to ask so many questions. To ask her what did she do now that his heart is no longer longing for her? What did she say to make him wanted to agree with whatever statement she just gave? Why did they break up?

But no, the question remained unasked as the fireworks started to spark around the neighborhood.

It’s officially 12am, the night of Christmas and he was standing next to the girl who might be his future wife.

Both of them looked up and from where they were standing, watching the beautiful fireworks together with now someone who is a stranger to his heart, Donghae could hear Yoona and his cousins loudly saying “MERRY CHIRSTMAS SEOUL!!!” followed by laughter.

“Merry Christmas Sunye”

“Merry Christmas Donghae”

Both of them looked up to sky overlooking the fireworks with different image of future on their mind.

**

“Are you ready for your high school exam?” Donghae’s mum asked him with a pat on his back. It has been three days he moved into the house and his mum had been trying her best to make Donghae really felt at home.

He always thought his room is way too big for himself that he could allow his three cousins to pick their own spot in the room to sleep. But they will no longer be around, at last not here with in this big house.
No, that was wrong. It was him who left. His aunt house is like his real home. This mansion was not.

“I am” he said, pushing all the bad thought away.

He looked up, facing his mum’s tired face. Her face is small and beautiful, the face that had faced a lot of hardship in life. Each wrinkles on her face tells different story.

Donghae took his mum’s hand in him, reassuring her that he will not leave her again despite the painful memory of his father.

“I will be around so don’t worry. I will study hard so I can lead the company” he said it confidently but his mind hesitated.

Donghae’s mum smiled. He sure has grown up well his mother thought.

“And I heard from my sister that you got yourself a beautiful girlfriend. When will you allow me to meet her?” there was hope in that weary smile, hoping maybe his son will share that secret with her.

He hesitated. He wanted to make her happy. Heck, he lived to make his mother happy (the good result explains why). His mum is his whole life. Donghae sighed, feeling sorry to his mum.

If only the breaking up comes before the moving he secretly wish for the impossible.

“After graduation, I will introduce you to her” he told her full of confidence.

But deep inside, it’s nothing but his heart worst fear.

**

“Exam was hard” Nana pushing the books away from her face and naturally, Minhyuk took it.

“Exams always hard but I’m sure you are doing good Nana” the boyfriend consoling his girl.

Yoona and Henry who were walking behind the couple looked at each other with a sick face.

“I think I’m going to throw up” Henry said without caring to lower his voice.

“I heard that!” Minhyuk said without even having to turn his head.

Yoona chuckled as she could not help feeling sorry for Henry but seeing him getting bullied was equally fun too she had to admit silently.

“Stop that!” Henry said without even looking at her.

Yoona stopped her phase in front of her locker and started clearing things from the locker she had been using for the past two years, already losing Minhyuk and Nana amongst the crowd. They stopped in front of the lines of the locker.

“In two weeks, we will graduate” Yoona said while cleaning her locker. She took off every sticker and posters she had in there.

“I heard that for the tenth times today” Henry said while holding the box full of his own books waiting for his dear friend to finish her cleaning up.

“I mean, can you believe this? We are going out! No more school, no more late night study, I can dance all I want without worrying about exams!” Yoona said in disbelief.

If Yoona was a guy, Henry would love to punch him senseless. She was so thoughtless! How can be separated from him makes her want to dance? But then again this girl is way too pretty to be a guy so he let this one pass.
And because he adores her. That’s another problem.

“I hope we will get a wonderful result so we can go to the university that we always wanted to go” Yoona said absent-mindedly.

“We? Since when you and I decided to go to the same university?” Henry raised his eyebrows in curiosity. With those small eyes, it was hard to tell though.

“We are dancers so of course we want to go to Seoul Academy of Art, right?” Yoona looked at him, trying to extract the word ‘yes’ from his mind. It was a prestigious school that rarely takes admission from no one. But Yoona is a hardworking girl, it will be no surprise is her name is to be placed under the school’s name when they announce University’s admission this February.

Henry looked away when Yoona closed her locker, now clean from any trace of her stuff.

“ About that… there is something you should know about that” Henry had no choice.

“Okay, this sounds serious. What is it?” Even when she knew it would be serious, she can’t help to think that it was just another joke from Henry.

“I’m going to Julliard next month”

“Excuse me??”

**
“For the award of best academic achievement of all time, we would like to invite Mr. Lee Donghae and Miss Min Sunye to receive the award. These two students had not only maintain their top score throughout their school years, they also managed to bring the school good name by winning first place in National Arithmetic Championship and the firsts, in six month, to ring the Golden Bell from the show Golden Bell by answering all 100 questions correctly. Please welcome, Lee Donghae and Min Sunye”

Calmly walking on the stage, Donghae took his time thinking this will be the last time he will wear his school uniform. And it might be his last time standing next to Sunye. He glanced at his side, Sunye looked beautiful next to him but only for a few seconds, his attention went to woman on the crowd. He smiled at her. His mum was holding a bouquet of flowers smiling so widely at him. Even when this is his moment, having his mum to share this moment with is the best gift ever.

After they bowed down to the crowd, Sunye and Donghae left the stage using the different end. The stage is not big so he can see who was waiting at the other end.

The nervous-looking Yoona is cute to him. The smile refused to disappear at the sight of her

“And now we would like to announce to receivers for the award art and culture. These two have been representing the school for dance competition and not once they failed to bring back the winning trophy. The best dance partners the school owns and has been flying high, giving the school good names. And due the excellent performance, one of the award receivers has already been accepted to Julliard Collage in New York, one of the finest art schools in the world….”

“So the speech could not get any longer? When will they stop talking about you going to Julliard huh Henry?” Yoona talked to herself. She looked at the spot behind her that was supposed to be filled up by Henry. But he wasn’t there.

She had been losing her smile since she sent him off at the airport months ago. She was far too upset that he only told her about his departure a few days before he go to New York.

“Hey, I’ll comeback. And till then, we will always stay in touch” his last words before he went off to the departure gate.

But now, as she walked slowly towards the stage, she is alone, receiving the award for her and Henry. She smiled for the camera and her father before quickly making her way off the stage. Other than dancing stage, anything in front of audience that involves standing up like this made her feel nervous.

"ahh this is no fun Without that stupid boy" she sighed before walked out of the hall to meet her father who already did to take some picture.

**

“Congratulation”

Though the face was hidden behind that bouquet of yellow roses, Yoona knew right away who was behind it.
“Thank you Donghae” she said as she took the flowers, revealing the face that she doesn’t need to guess.
“I was caught huh?” he said shyly.

The ceremony had ended but they were still a lot of people on the school ground. Some took pictures of commemoration, some just want to look around the school for one last time before but not Yoona. All she did after her father left was standing in front of the big banner that announce the university each students will enter this fall. And now Donghae came to interrupt. Not that she want to complaint. Maybe she could use a company.

“So you are going to Seoul Academy of Art?” Donghae voiced out as he looked up to the banner. Her name was the first to come out under the name of the university.

And her name was the only name that was accepted in the university.

“And you, what about you? Your name is not even on the list. Don’t tell me you too are going to America?”
Donghae smiled.

And Yoona knew she was right.

“I guess I will be left alone huh?”

and she thought she saw Donghae lose her smile at that word. Did she said too much? Did it hurt him?

Ouh wait now, do I even care about him???

“Donghae…” a middle age woman who dressed in what it looks like a very expensive coat came out of nowhere. She is a very elegant woman for her age.

Yoona automatically bowed to her as a sign of respect but she was honestly clueless as to who is she.

“Oh, Umma”

Yoona lose her smile. His mum? Donghae’s mum???

"Is this..." Donghae's mum stop half way as Donghae went to her side and grabbed her shoulder and pushed her close to him.

"What are you..." before Yoona managed to say anything Donghae cut him "Umma, my girlfriend, Im Yoona"

Yoona looked up and her eyes met Donghae's eyes. They were pleading behind that smile but his gaze was soft.

This is the first time they stood so close next to each other like.

And as far as she could remember, this is the first time their eyes met. Her heartbeat increased and her hands felt cold.

"She is so pretty! I am Donghae mum" Donghae's mum took her hand in hers and caressed it lovingly. Yoona liked it. It made her feels a mum's love after so many years of losing it.

"You are the first girl she introduce to me"

"And only girl" Donghae said, now losing his grip on her shoulder. And she thought he was letting her go but she was wrong.

He took her free hand and held it, in front of his mum!

Again she looked up at him "what's up with that? her eyes seemed to talk to him.
But he didn't understand her, or he PRETENDED not to understand her. Instead he smiled so sweetly at her that made Yoona want to punched him hard.

"I'd say you have a good taste Donghae. And even went to a great collage"
"Thank you Madam" She bowed to her as she complimented her.
"Eyy, why are you calling me madam, should't you call me Umma already?"

Yoona's heart is too weak for all of these. She might as well faint.
"Go on, call my mum Umma" Donghae slightly poked her shoulder.

Yoona jerking her eyes at Donghae but turn to his mother with a sincere smile "Thank you... Um... Umma"

Donghae's mum smile and pinched her cheek lovingly "Aigoo, such a beautiful girl!"
Yoona smiled widely at Donghae's mum act. Having a mum, although not her real mum, must be great. She anvied Donghae at this.

"So Yoona, why don't you join us for dinner sometimes?"
"Eh? ohh... Yes, I will" She stuttered at the sudden invitation.

"But not today umma. Yoona and I had a plan to walk around in the uniform for one last time"
"Did we?" Yoona said in sarcasm that only Donghae would notice.
"Of course dear" Donghae replied without looking at her.

Get me out of this situation please! Someone, anyone! Her heart screamed for help.

"You two go and have fun. I will just go back. And nice meeting you Yoona. My son is lucky to have a pretty girl by his side"

"Nice meeting you too Um... Umma. Take care of your health"
and so his mum left

"What was that Lee Donghae???" Yoona pulled her hand from his grip.

"My girlfriend, let's go" Slyly Donghae took her hand again and lead the way out of the school.
