It has come to my constant attention this week that we, as a society, are racist.
Not bigotry-racism but equality-racism.
Let me explain.
We want everyone to be equal but we're keeping terms like "minorities" and programs like "affirmative action".
At this point in my life I don't think there is a majority or minority of ethnicity but more a concentration of population; there are more of one ethnic group concentrated in certain areas than of another and I've determined this while working on the Census. This, as a result, means that the majority is based on location not ethnicity. Also, the term "minority" only continues to separate us, not unite. When a group claims that they are a minority and that another group is bent on suppressing them because of that alone, I tend to think that they aren't focusing on the actual issues (ie illegal immigrants or ethnic favoritism). It's like a crutch we, the people, have given them so that when they feel they shouldn't be held responsible or they want things done their way they can fall back on it and we have no choice but to fold.
(Also, when was it wrong to fly an, American flag in America because it doesn't represent diversity??? Because I'm pretty sure America is called "The Melting Pot" because it's massively diverse...)
And if programs such as affirmative action were based on lifestyle and not race, I think this wouldn't be such a problem. If it is impossible for a student to afford a school not because they aren't working or they lack the academic standing but merely because their family cannot aid them then a program to help should be established. There should, of course, be consequences such as keeping grades above such and such a point and they must either work a minimum of xx hours whether for the school or outside to show that they are trying to improve their financial situation themselves. Obviously, the consequences should be reasonable.
That is my vent on all this. Rage or agree as you see fit.
