predictable rage

Visited Mamas and Papas baby and pregnant lady things website. Purchased pairs of reduced-price maternity tights as part of my endless quest to acquire same that do not fall down. Noticed there was reduced-price babywear. Found a couple of nice things, including small fuzzy jacket (brown), small knit hoodie (brown and white striped), and small ( Read more... )

But would you put the girls' leggings on a boy?

Probably, they were red and grey striped AFAIR. I just preferred the teal, as it will go nicely with at least one of the child's ridiculous hats.

Actually, now that I think of it, they were probably the only baby girl item that wasn't pink or pink-decorated. Though maybe red has now been reclassified as a form of pink for rigid gendering purposes?

I probably wouldn't put pastel pink on a boy, but I don't think I'd put pastel pink on anybody.

See, brown and beige can both be made to go with pastel pink, but teal wouldn't, so clearly they can't be for girls who must always have some pink on hand at all times or else they explode.

Um. I've been meaning to ask this for a while, being as how I first came to your journal after reading your vehement rejection of all things spangly or polka-dotted in the world of swimsuits. But... there's quite a lot of pink in this journal. Indeed you're making me type in pink right now. Your wallpaper has got pastel pink flowers on it. So are the pink problems just with clothes, then?

Hee! I have actually been known to wear bright or raspberry pink myself. The thing that irks me is more the enforced THIS IS WHAT GIRLS/BOYS WEAR-ness of it, or THIS IS WHAT ALL GIRLS/BOYS LIKE, that GOD FORBID YOU SHOULD PUT BLUE ON A GIRL OR PEOPLE WILL THINK SHE'S A BOY OH NOES, or BOYS CAN'T LIKE PINK IT WILL MAKE THEM INTO GIRLS etc.

I think the spangly polka-dot swimsuit thing was a related issue, actually: if you are going to be A MOTHER then obviously you have to look SWEET and FEMININE and PRETTY and DEMURE (just like little girls!), despite the fact that I just want a functional swimsuit and, er, I think it's fairly obvious that I'm female given that I AM BLOODY PREGNANT.

(And I have been meaning to revamp my journal layout at some stage, as I did this one in my last job when I was very, very bored....)

There's a thing I hadn't thought of - I get mistaken for a bloke in certain circumstances, being over six foot, broad of shoulder and long of stride, sort of thing, and it amuses me, when someone says 'excuse me, this is the ladies' loos' to basically flash my tits at them. I mean, usually just moving any bulky layers of clothing out of the way, once I'm down to a t-shirt it's usually fairly obvious. But, not that I'm likely to be pregnant any time soon, but if I ever am, I hope to get the opportunity to flash my bump.

I've had a post brewing on this very subject for months. At the Cheap 'n' Nasty (TM) places where I shop for baby clothes, it is, indeed, nigh on impossible to buy gender-neutral clothing. Girls' clothes are pink or purple with butterflies and other sundry cutesy things on them; boys' clothes are blue with trucks. Worse still, IMO, are the REPULSIVE SLOGANS I have witnessed. "Mummy's little angel" "Heartbreaker in training" "If you think I'm cute, you should see my grandma!" BLLEUUUGHHHH.

But! There is hope.

With bathing suits, there is, I discovered after trying on many maternity suits of horror, no need at all to buy specialised stuff. Find something cheap ith a seam or band under the bust, and buy one a couple of sizes up from your usual size. Bathers are easily stretchy enough to go over even a very pregnant belly. I went swimming in a size 14 normal pair of bathers that cost A$30 two days before I gave birthAs for baby clothes, I realise I am in Australia and therefore not in a position to give you practical ( ... )

OH GOD THE SLOGANS. I spotted two horrifying little suits in Mothercare at the weekend, one for boys with "Daddy Loves Me More Than Football" and one for girls with "Mummy Loves Me More Than Shopping". BLEEEURGHHHH.

I finally managed to find an incredibly plain black Speedo maternity suit that cost pretty much the same as a regular one, so was spared the foofy maternity suit horror, but yeah, I can see that a larger regular one could work as well.
