predictable rage

Visited Mamas and Papas baby and pregnant lady things website. Purchased pairs of reduced-price maternity tights as part of my endless quest to acquire same that do not fall down. Noticed there was reduced-price babywear. Found a couple of nice things, including small fuzzy jacket (brown), small knit hoodie (brown and white striped), and small ( Read more... )

But would you put the girls' leggings on a boy?

Probably, they were red and grey striped AFAIR. I just preferred the teal, as it will go nicely with at least one of the child's ridiculous hats.

Actually, now that I think of it, they were probably the only baby girl item that wasn't pink or pink-decorated. Though maybe red has now been reclassified as a form of pink for rigid gendering purposes?

I probably wouldn't put pastel pink on a boy, but I don't think I'd put pastel pink on anybody.

Bright pink?

Hmm, dunno, I'd be more likely to, but it is largely unavailable in babywear (as opposed to Horrid Pastels). I definitely know at least one small boy who has and loves a hot pink jumper.

And I will definitely be clothing the infant in at least one purple garment regardless of gender (purple being, apparently, also GIRL COLOURED) as the awesome Danish Viking Ship Babygro is purple.

That was my thought exactly. A lot of people have no problem putting "boy colors" on a girl, but can't wrap their head around the idea of putting "girl colors" on a boy. I used to dress my boys in pink all the time (it's my favorite color) and people always got this O_o expression after they'd comment on my "daughter" and I'd correct them. OMGZ UR GOIN TO GIV THEM TEH GHEY IF U DRESS BOYS IN PINK!

We bought my five-year-old son new sheets for his bed this past weekend, and he expressed an interest in pink sheets (as in saying, "I want pink sheets!") and once we were in the store, my husband immediately pointed out some Transformers sheets and started talking about how cool robots are. Needless to say, my son went with the Transformers instead. I was pretty annoyed by my husband obviously distracting our son from the pink sheets. (I did pick up a set of pink sheets as well though, so he can swap them out if/when he feels like it.)

I remember you writing about G wanting pink sheets! I thought that was great, and I too am irked on your behalf at your husband distracting him from them.

As I said, I think my reluctance to dress a boy in pastel pink is more to do with the fact that I don't like pastel pink myself. I suspect hot pink would be cute on any infant, except most of the babywear I've seen doesn't come in it. Bright shades in general are very thin on the ground unless you go to the more expensive shops or Scandinavia. Bah.

(I've realized that my colour choices for the proto-infant so far have been based on my/B's colouring, which is positively inviting us to get some kind of recessive genetic freakery and end up with a fair-haired, olive-skinned baby who might actually look good in pastels.)

If you and B had a child with that colouring, I think... well I don't know what I think except that it would really erode my faith in Mendel.

I do hear you on the pastels.

Actually, my dad has that colouring, pretty much! You probably didn't notice the fair hair when you met him, what with him being somewhat bald at this stage, but he tans very easily and used to go very blond in the sun when he was blessed with hair. He reminds us of this frequently when old photos come out ("I was as a bronzed God", etc.).

This comment forced me to go and look at the parrot picture all over again.

....that just lost me a good five minutes in laughter.

Hey, leedy, you were wearing blue sandals, and blue shorts, and a top with blue round the neck; it's no wonder you have rejected the True Colour Division Way for children! Your mother's casual 70s feminism has caused the future trauma foretold...

Well it's no wonder, I've heard that her mother worked outside the home. What sort of role model has leedy had, really?

AND she is clearly wearing trousers!

Also don't forget my blue ... er, what appears to be a shower cap, though they can't have made me wear a shower cap in public, can they?
