Visited Mamas and Papas baby and pregnant lady things website. Purchased pairs of reduced-price maternity tights as part of my endless quest to acquire same that do not fall down. Noticed there was reduced-price babywear. Found a couple of nice things, including small fuzzy jacket (brown), small knit hoodie (brown and white striped), and small ( Read more... )

I've had a post brewing on this very subject for months. At the Cheap 'n' Nasty (TM) places where I shop for baby clothes, it is, indeed, nigh on impossible to buy gender-neutral clothing. Girls' clothes are pink or purple with butterflies and other sundry cutesy things on them; boys' clothes are blue with trucks. Worse still, IMO, are the REPULSIVE SLOGANS I have witnessed. "Mummy's little angel" "Heartbreaker in training" "If you think I'm cute, you should see my grandma!" BLLEUUUGHHHH.

But! There is hope.

With bathing suits, there is, I discovered after trying on many maternity suits of horror, no need at all to buy specialised stuff. Find something cheap ith a seam or band under the bust, and buy one a couple of sizes up from your usual size. Bathers are easily stretchy enough to go over even a very pregnant belly. I went swimming in a size 14 normal pair of bathers that cost A$30 two days before I gave birth.

As for baby clothes, I realise I am in Australia and therefore not in a position to give you practical suggestions, but I eventually tracked down plenty of non-pastel gender neutral stuff. I got some adorable but stuff from Sozo including these tragically discontinued Koi fish and turtle sets. And I saw all in one suits in lots of bright colours (red, purple, navy, deep green, orange) this very day in Big W (discount chain store). They exist. It just took me a while to find them.

OH GOD THE SLOGANS. I spotted two horrifying little suits in Mothercare at the weekend, one for boys with "Daddy Loves Me More Than Football" and one for girls with "Mummy Loves Me More Than Shopping". BLEEEURGHHHH.

I finally managed to find an incredibly plain black Speedo maternity suit that cost pretty much the same as a regular one, so was spared the foofy maternity suit horror, but yeah, I can see that a larger regular one could work as well.
