Equational Expressions That's fancy talk for something which is equal to something else or the "something" IS "something" expression.
I am Nikki.
Steve is American.
Sandy is a student.
This is an apple.

The dictionary form of "To be" is 이다.
When conjugated 이다 takes a few forms. The first being...

after a consonantafter a vowelPolite
Form(Noun)이에요(Noun)예요Formal
Form(Noun)입니다(Noun)ㅂ니다
Topic-comment structure is a basic sentence structure. The concept is simple. Pick a object, person, or idea as the topic, then make a statement or description about the topic.

은 and 는 are particles that are attached to the topic to indicate that this noun is what the statement is about.
은 is used after a consonant.
는 is used after a vowel.

So... to put it all together.
저는 니키예요. - I am Nikki.
그는 이민숩니다 - He is Lee Min-Soo.
저는 미국 사람이에요. - I am American.
샌디 왕은 학생입니다. - Sandy Wang is a student.

Then, the opposite is the Negative Equational or the "Something" IS NOT "something" form.
"To not be" is 아니다 or conjugated 아니에요.

Like the topic particles 은/는, objects have a particle to identify them too. The object is followed by 이/가.
이 after a consonant.
가 after a vowel.

저는 한국 사람(이) 아니에요. - I am not Korean.
저는 센디(가) 아니에요. - I am not Sandy.
