ok, so trying not to feel like a total failure as a teacher. just finished grading the astronomy test for my students. seasons, phases of the moon, etc
astronomy is where preconceptions go to die. kids/people just aren't capable or willing to let go of their pre-conceptions. they stay with them for eternity.
most recent saddness: one student who still thinks that phases of the moon are caused by clouds covering the moon. and the dozens of students who still think that the seasons are caused by the earth tilting closer to the sun or further from it.
we're trained to observe, address, and work with students preconceptions and pre-knowledge... but how to replace that knowledge with different impressions.... it's so difficult. I feel like I need to be a brain surgeon, diving into minds and restructuring the neurons... if only we knew how the brain really dealt with and processed information!
