I lost my traveling companion some ways back. My brother. We got separated when something spooked his horse real bad, and now he's in the woods somewheres. He's all I got, ( Read more... )

I think you should. There's a fort down there. I'm not going to risk my neck for nothing, and I don't want to get hanged by a bunch of angry soldiers.

No Englishman's gonna hunt you down or shoot you for deserting way up here. If anything, we'll be dancing a jig if the townsfolk turn out to be better armed than us.

I'll keep the fire for you. Don't make a mess, Ironside.

[Sometime late one night, she might hear the sounds of a fiddle being played, somewhere off in the distance. Mr Zed is amusing himself and, with typical bravado, not caring if anyone hears him -- in fact, one might think he was inviting people to come find him. While he can play a fine reel, when he plays for himself like this, he prefers Bach. Not that he expects anyone else to recognise it, or realise that he's putting his own strange variations on the music.]

[Jaime never could tell songs apart. She didn't know anything besides the songs she's heard in saloons and during Mass, and nobody played the fiddle where she was from. She doesn't know what she's hearing, but it doesn't matter. She likes it.

Hands on her belt, she goes to search for the source of the music, thinking whoever it is might either want company or be needing a bullet in the head.]

[On following the music to its source, Jaime will find Mr Zed camped out beneath a rock outcropping. He's sitting on a stone next to a small fire, playing his fiddle with grace.]

[Oh, well ain't that just the perfect picture. Jaime stands where the fiddler can see, though keeps a good distance between them and a cautious hand by her holster. Just in case.]

What's that you're playing? It's pretty.
