Rating system:

April 2001

Tarnish on Bronze, by Sitnah.
Fandom: Due South
Pairing(s): Fraser/Ray K.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe au lait.
OK, so it's not really all that dark. It's just sad. And a little desperate. And lonely. Shut up, it's my recs page.

Mirror-Balance, by Spyke (spykeraven).
Fandom: Sentinel
Pairing(s): Blair/f, Jim/Blair.
Darkfic rating: Espresso.
Creepy, messy, hurting Blair-as-shaman story, with a nightmarish feel and several nightmares inside it.

Your Last Cloudy Day, by Pares (kormantic).
Fandom: Due South
Pairing(s): Ray K/Stella.
Darkfic Rating: Cappucino.
A nice way to break your heart, if you're in a mood for it.

Stars, by Basingstoke (basingstoke).
Fandom: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Darkfic Rating: Cappucino.
I'm on a sadness trip right now. Anything that makes me cry...but I digress. "Stars" is possibly the loveliest, sweetest, saddest short piece I've ever read. It's set between Qui-Gon's death and funeral, and is part of a larger series called The Shores of Destiny. It's another POV story--like everything else this week.

Flight, by Karen Colohan.
Fandom: Highlander.
Darkfic rating: Cafe noir.
Another rec from the "where does Methos go, and what does he do..." challenge (see Fear of the Dark below). I'm into POV pieces this week, I think, and this one is soft and creepy and mournful.

Ray Likes it Red, by Cara Chapel (cara_chapel).
Fandom: Due South.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe au lait.
A sad Vecchio POV piece set just after the episode Some Like it Red.

March 2001

Au Revoir, by Hafital (hafital).
Fandom: Star Trek: The Original Series.
Pairing(s): Kirk/Cyrano Jones.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe au lait, with sugar.
Yes, you read the pairing correctly. Technically, I shouldn't rec this one, since it's the result of a challenge I made on ASCEM. But you know what? I don't care. I love this story.

Being of Bargains and Bonds, by masoumi.
Fandom: Harry Potter.
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
Sad and weird and violent, with an interesting magic realist edge to it. What if you're the Boy who Lived...and the other half of your soul is the Dark Lord?

The Hanged Man, by Basingstoke (basingstoke).
Fandom: Murder Most Likely.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe noir.
One of the most exquisitely spare stories I've ever read. Particularly noteworthy for the use of color and rhythm. (You do not need to know Murder Most Likely to read this story.)

Second Extinction, by Saavant.
Fandom: Star Trek.
Pairing(s): George/Gracie.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso
Beautiful metaphor work, lust, and tragedy, all handled with a fine and sensitive hand.

Three Days Down, by Jane St. Clair (3jane).
Fandom: Highlander.
Pairing(s): Methos/Duncan.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
Something about Methos' rawness in this story speaks to me. Makes my eyes sting every time I read it...you know, the kind of sad where you want to cry, but can't, like after sex that left you lonely.

Fear of the Dark, by Mickey M.
Fandom: Highlander.
Pairing(s): Methos/m.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso macchiato.
The author's summary says "Where does Methos go, and what does he do, when he disappears?". I don't think I can add much of anything to that.

Coruscant Gothic, by Mystique.
Fandom: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe noir.
A Faulkner-influenced, one-sided, blood-red little gem. Marvelous voice work and a masterful hand with emotion.

A Song of Innocence, and its sequel An Old Passion by MJ Lee.
Fandom: Batman.
Pairing(s): Bruce/Dick.
Darkfic Rating: Double espresso.
A truly creepy pair of Batslash stories, bringing out the more twisted side of Bruce Wayne. (Well, honestly, all sides of him are twisted.) The first story is from Dick's POV, the second from Bruce's. There's something shattering and demented about the whole canon relationship, now that I think about it...now that these stories have made me think about it.

Roots Rain, by Kat Allison (katallison).
Fandom: Due South.
Pairing(s): Fraser/RayK (sort of).
Darkfic Rating: Cappucino.
Lyrical and melancholy. Fraser's loneliness just eats away at your soul.

The Book of Lost Days and its sequel The Calm That Comes, by Taselby (taselby).
Fandom: Highlander.
Pairing(s): Duncan/Methos.
Darkfic Rating: Double espresso.
"Lost Days," like "Roots Rain" above, is a loneliness story; "Calm" is much bloodier. The progression from the terrible lonely feel of the first story to the harsh and bitter ache of the second is marvelous.
