Rating system:

February 2001

Shrapnel, by Sasscat Bu-to-y.
Fandom: Due South.
Pairing(s): Ray K/Thatcher.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe noir, with sugar.
I'm required by law to recommend this story. Sasscat used to write Trek, and then she vanished. When Basingstoke sent me the URL for her Due South fiction, I went "oooh, Sasscat". Anyone who makes you go "oooh" you have to rec if they write something dark. Those are the rules that I just made up.

Brainchild, by Wax Jism (wax_jism).
Fandom: Sentinel.
Pairing(s): Jim/Blair.
Darkfic Rating: Double espresso.
Well, I think it's sweet. It's a story about love, the kind with teeth.

Adamas and That Which Survives, by Sylvia Volk (sylviavolk2000).
Fandom: Highlander.
Darkfic Rating: Double espresso.
Betrayal, insanity, and the origins of the Horsemen. This pair of stories uses imagery and pacing to excellent effect.

Just a Game, by Parda and Nightsky.
Fandom: Highlander.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso macchiato, with sugar.
A melancholy story--just a story--nothing, really, to make you hurt inside. Nothing at all.

Could I Revive Within Me, by AC Chapin.
Fandom: Due South.
Pairing(s): Fraser/f.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe au lait.
Someone got tears in my coffee.

That Which Suits a Part Infects the Whole, by Sleeps With Coyotes (ciceqi).
Fandom: Highlander.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
A just-before-the-Horsemen Methos story with an unusual answer to the question of why Methos was Death--or why Death was Methos.

Whatever (Firing Pin), by Wax Jism (wax_jism).
Fandom: Highlander/X-Men. Logan/Tyler King.
Darkfic Rating: A sweet, sad cappucino.
First off: mental image, yum. Second off: lovely language. Third off: tailor-made for heartbreak.

Turning Point, by Killa (killabeez).
Fandom: Star Trek: The Original Series
Pairing(s): Kirk/Spock.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
This is a story that, although I love the sequel, I wish it hadn't been sequelized. I recommend that you not read the sequel--you'll just stick with the original and be glad of it. (Oh, go ahead and read the sequel; it's marvelous and angsty. It's just not exactly my cuppa joe.)

January 2001

Silver Rain, by Destina Fortunato (destina).
Fandom: Sentinel.
Pairing(s): Jim/Blair.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe noir.
A sad, deep story; one I recommended long ago on No Warning and then forgot to recommend here. Lovely, with a wonderful sense of both stillness and motion.

The Fire, by Francesca (cesperanza).
Fandom: Sentinel.
Pairing(s): Jim/Blair.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso macchiato by text, double espresso by subtext. Mmmm.
Finally, Cesca's written something I can list here. I love her work in general, but while it tends to the intelligent and offbeat, it doesn't often tend towards the darker consequences of some bits of Sentinel fanon. This story not only tends that way, it uses it as a lever to move Jim's world.

Hypnosis, by elaine.
Fandom: Due South.
Pairing(s): Fraser/RayK.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso macchiato.
Much too short and fairly creepy. In the episode "Seeing is Believing", Fraser hypnotized Ray and gave him an (almost) innocent post-hypnotic suggestion. This story explores--all too briefly--what might have been if Fraser had given Ray more than one suggestion.

The BS Factor, by Jen Riddler.
Fandom: Sentinel.
Pairing(s): Jim/Blair.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
Margie just posted something about this on Prospect-L, which reminded me that I'd been meaning to recommend it for a very long time. This is an old story, written early in the show's run, so it now reads like an AU. Cast all that aside; pretend you only know first season--and enjoy. (Or do what I did, which was stare at it wide-eyed and shake.)

Close Your Eyes Tight, by Livia.
Fandom: Due South.
Darkfic Rating: Espresso.
Very short, very intense.

Bright Colors of the Sith, by Darth Nonie (aka Nonie Rider).
Fandom: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Darkfic Rating: Cafe noir.
An unusual and very different look at the Phantom Menace, from Darth Maul's viewpoint. I fell in love with this Maul--and the story itself gives me shivers of foreboding and fear.

Night Driving, by Jessica Harris.
Fandom: Due South.
Pairing(s): Fraser/RayK.
Darkfic Rating: Cappucino.
Soft and bitter and forty winks long. Ray angst, Fraser pain, relationship hell, all in a short story so short it's barely there. (Look here for a link to a great cover by Livia. Not to mention Jessica's other Due South story, which has a fabulous last line and some great metaphor work.)

star trek, star wars, darkfic recs, due south, sentinel, highlander, other fandoms, recs
