One of my hard drives is acting up (again) on the Studio PC. WINDOWS can't seem to read the partitions on it correctly, and yet UBUNTU can! Had a similar problem last week when I was ill - headachy today as well. Have a suspicion  that extreme cold is affecting the drive ( Read more... )

I got the sound working by simply choosing a different speaker option, so I decided to install Adobe CS5 anyway. It'll take 45 minutes, but I'm engrossed in a graphic Novel called Habibi by Craig Thompson, and will continue reading that until it's done. The graphic novel's about two orphens who get enslaved. Windows is up and running, with an endless number of updates until it catches up with the present. Firefox and Thunderbird reinstalled perfectly (the secret is to have the profiles directories saved somewhere safe), but I have have yet to install Adobe CS5 and (as usual) the sound isn't on, yet. Have backed up stuff (surprisingly little I discovered, since the win system is on C: and everything else is on other partition). I've noted where my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles are (not on C:), and now it's time to uninstall Adobe CS5. I have recovered 100% of my documents! Am now backing up my setting and application stuff (will take about 3 hours)

Reinstall here I come.

Am using Malwarebytes to spot bits of DIRECTRDR. Avast is actually clobbering bits and pieces of it as well. I have an appointment elsewhere at 10am, so I'm going to have to leave them to it while out. In the meantime I'm recovering most of my documents (phew!). Sigh - I like Linux, I really do, but sometimes it does more harm than good.

I recently bought a terabyte SATA drive and added it to my study PC. So far so good. I set up a windows swap partition at the start of it, with the intention of in stalling Ubuntu further along the drive and after that a new work area for graphic files. The current install ( Read more... )
