me: yeah, it felt like with the love triangle, it would have been a lot stronger if they were both good choices and katniss picked one, rather than having one sort of handed to her

me: I preferred Gale because he was not Peeta
me: even though he has about 10% of a character
Anna: i talked about this with greg, and he hated [both of them]
Anna: until i pointed out that if he reversed the genders it would be fine
Anna: i mean basically both gale and peeta are women
Anna: in their roles and character development
me: hahaha
me: That's part of what I do like, obvs

Anna: but it's not actually good
me: no, it's not good to just reverse it
Anna: i mean, it's good in that it shows what a difference pronouns make
me: Right, if you reversed the genders
me: There would be some automatic baggage that you would suddenly add

me: (1) forgiving the author totally that the love interests are not interesting
me: (2) hero liking whoever suffers the most and needs the most saving is totally normal
me: (3) Gale obvs unfeminine therefore not real contender
me: (4) all the love interests being way more interested in love than the main character is totally expected
me: but yeah, all those things are still annoying
me: I'm just used to finding them annoying!!

me: Possibly one of the main reasons I didn't like Peeta was that I didn't picture him as being attractive
me: So maybe the movie will help
me: I pictured Gale as being cute
me: Tall dark-haired lithe hunter type guy with olive skin, great
me: I pictured Peeta as a giant baby
me: Kind of doughy with bouncy blond curls
me: Like a cherub
