A good start

It's been a pretty good start to the year, albeit rather a busy one.

So far, it's gone like this:

New Year's Eve: stayed in and made cake from a recipe from TLL: chocolate cake with Bailey's buttercream and chocolate ganache. It didn't look all that great (hence not doing photos), but it tasted gorgeous. :)

New Year's Day: As A was off work, we took our daily walk somewhere slightly more interesting than 'twice round the block' and checked out a section of the Dollis Valley Greenwalk. Then, in the evening, we went to the cinema and saw Birdman. A liked it better than I did - I wasn't too convinced by the ending - but I'd still give it a solid 8/10, as it was well-scripted, well-acted and beautifully shot. It certainly set the cinematic bar for the year pretty high.

2 January: Our 13th anniversary (how did that happen?). As is pretty much standard, we hadn't got our act together to go away anywhere, so we visited the National Maritime Museum for a quick look at the Longitude Exhibition (which was OK) and the Longitude Punk'd offshoot (which was way cooler - as anyone who cares to do a Google image search will see..). In the evening, we stuck with tradition and had a seriously expensive dinner at La Porte des Indes.

3 January: Hosted a games evening attended by prunesquallormd, Jon and Louise. Played: Age of War (a Japanese-themed dice-based game, my kind of simple); Splendor (one of A's Christmas pressies, a collecting thing with a jewel theme, which was quite fun even though I was rubbish at it); Lords of Waterdeep, again, but with an extension to do with evil and corruption (again, quite fun even though I'm rubbish at things like this).

8 January: It was A's day off and my meeting for the evening was cancelled, so we wandered over the the Prince Charles to catch What We Do in the Shadows, probably the funniest vampire house-share 'documentary' ever. Since that's a fairly small field, I'll add that it is from the people who did 'Flight of the Conchords' and 'Eagle vs Shark', and that the explanation for why vampires prefer virgins' blood was a particular highlight, causing much creasing up/drink-splutterage at our showing.

In between that lot I did actually manage to get some work done, and reckon I may finally slay the Backlog Monster with another hour or so's work tomorrow. Plus, as mentioned in my brief squee-post a little while back, I applied for a job. (*Crosses fingers for interview next week...*)

A's show is coming came down tonight, so he'll be out until some insane hour (like 6am!) for the get-out. I was sort-of planning on going to Invocation, but it seemed that nobody else was up for it and in the end I decided a quiet evening in might be more the ticket right now. Now that I've finished the day's work and once I've finished this update, there shall be slightly more food and drink and either TV or reading or a bit of each for an hour or two...or three. :)
