I translated Shige (NEWS) & Goseki's (ABC) short blurbs from the June 2000 issue of Duet. They were quite young then and it shows in their choice of subject matter. Enjoy ^_^

"Right now, school is my oasis!"
I started middle school in April, and now, school is really fun. Just the other day, everyone in our class went camping together. The people who eat a lot, people who get hurt, people who snore like no other, anyhow, with a class full of characters with personalities, it was extremely fun. At night, the pillow fight started, but I shoved the scattered pillows one by one into the closet. Aren't I great?
An opposite story of a time when I became super blue. On my way home from work, once I got on the train a drunk guy threw up. Then, I was so shocked that I couldn't move from that spot. I felt sick...
Goseki Koichi
"I killed 10 ants, sorry."
The first time I thought, "I did a good thing, huh" was soon after I entered the Jimusho. When I was riding the train, an old man got on, I mustered up courage and handed over my seat with "*douzo." With a face that seemed happy, he said "thanks." ...Somehow, that day, all day long I was happy.
People always say "you're nice," the truth is, I have killed ants before... Someone told me, "If you kill 10 ants, it'll rain the next day." I really killed them. But, the next day was sunny**. Ants, I'm sorry.

notes:
*douzo is a word used in different situations, but here it's used to offer something
**the word he used was pi-tan (i can't type japanese on this computer). the dictionary defines it as a "state of fine weather where one is subject to direct sunlight."
