This blog entry gives a perfect argument about why people are reluctant to give up their cars.  Cycling isn't inherently dangerous, it's the auto-oriented/favored environment that's dangerous.  As a designer myself, I really chafed at the idea of 1' shoulders b/c 'that's all the county requires'...that's minimum you fucktard
