Peas are nearly done - dry, dessicated plants, with single short pods of fat seeds waiting to be plucked and eaten. I'll cut them down tomorrow and replant for the fall harvest. Beans are still going strong, despite each plant being only about the size of a skull (sorry, best scale I could think of on the spot); I'll replant between those, and maybe make them into a square instead.
My tomatoes are beginning to set fruit - one of the Marmandes is ripe, the Fruticas (cherry variety) are popping out little green fruits, and the German Strawberry is making hilariously strawberry-shaped green tomatoes that'll ripen in a few weeks. Peppers are still slow - the plants started late and I was bad about watering. Alas!
Zucchini has produced two huge fruits and is making more. I was going to plant another one around now, but he's still young enough that I'll just have one harvest this year.
Arugula is done - I'll probably rip it out and reseed, and reseed the spinach as well, so we have fall greens. I'll put in some lacinato (dino) kale in the fall, probably where the tomatoes are, which will overwinter nicely.
Beets are just starting to get to good eating size, and the greens are more than ready to be harvested (just a leaf or two per plant every few days gives a nice side dish). I'll plant more next to these this weekend so we have fall beets too. Maybe even a winter planting. The carrots are a little more pissy; they seem to just not like this soil. I should consider a Thumbelina or other short variety next year and see if that helps.
All told, it's doing quite well for a 4'x8' patch that requires very rare weeding (since I water only in areas that require water) and only two cans of water a day (though it might prefer more). Definitely reaping my reward from the earth on this one... yum!
