The big brouhaha in Vancouver, over the theft of the 2010 Olympic flag, is bordering on ridiculous.
The 1600 dollar flag was stolen a couple days ago (
Story), and there was some talk of setting up a 24 hour guard. Yes, this story was on equal footing with the story that a horrific torturer of women had just served a 20 year sentence, and had been released into the same community where the flag was stolen. Not a related story, but why are we even talking about this fucking flag when people are getting knifed in the streets, and serial rapists are let loose to run among us - gimme a break!
The story is even bigger today, as a group calling themselves something like the "Native Coalition" (I wasn't really giving this 'news' my full attention, but the ridiculousness seeped through) sent a photo of themselves holding up a Native Pride flag, as they posed with the ginourmous stolen Olympic flag in the background.
I sympathize with their ideals. Last year, there was a demonstration at the aptly named Eagle Ridge, which was destroyed in the name of highway development for non other than the elitist Olympics! Many people protested, and some really serious people held a sit in of sorts on the ridge. Well, Kevin Falcon (our Minister of Highways) had a court order imposed, and those that couldn't afford to lose their careers walked away, so the only people left to haul off to jail were hardcores and grannies. One of those grannies died of pneumonia last week, in jail. Another, aged 78, was imprisoned for 10 months, a couple days ago.
We have grannies dying in jail, low-renters kicked out of hotels to be refurbished for the Olympics - effectively causing more homelessness, and we're crying over a fucking flag (that's fun to say, try it!)?
Seriously. I thought, when I was young, that it was just my youthful ignorance, or whatever, causing me to think the world is run by dangerously stupid people. As I head towards senility, my feelings only get stronger on this position.
As all the kids are saying: "What the fuck?!"
