Notes: Huge thanks to specialj67 for being my beta. Jackie, you rock!
Because LJ is a little b*tch, I had to cut down this chapter and divide in two parts. The second one is linked in the bottom of this one!

Chapter 29

Ianto ran back to the door that led to the emergency exit as fast as he could, feeling the weight of hundred lives on his shoulders. He needed to get down to the cells and convince Waters to help him overwrite this protocol or else, or else...there was nothing else. He didn’t think Mr. Smith would be able to do it alone. According to Luke, there were just too many layers of defense protocols and firewalls to deactivate and circumvent before arriving to the actual cleaning protocol in time.

He pushed the door open and looked over the railing, the stairwell spiralling down, down, down. He had five stories to go, too many steps to count, and no time to waist. Time to put these new “superpowers” to a real test. He climbed over the railing and hooked his arms back through the rail.

Three...two...one...

Let his body fall into the dark nothingness below. Less than a second later, his legs hit solid ground and crumpled underneath him with a loud crack and excruciating pain.

“Ianto?!  IANTO?!  What’s happening, what are you doing??” Luke’s voice crackled in his ear.

Ianto screamed and almost lost his consciousness, but as quickly as it had come, the pain disappeared, being replaced by the telltale tingle that signaled the healing provided by the 24th chromosome. Slowly he stood up and tested his legs with a few short steps, ignoring Luke’s frantic questions for the moment. He was fine. Absolutely fine. No pain, no nothing, not even a limp.

“I’m fine, Luke,” he informed through the earpiece. “I’m fine. Heading to the cells now.”

He ran the rest of the way separating him from the prison cell they had locked Waters and the two guards him. They had already recovered their consciousness and were looking slightly confused and apprehensive of the emergency alarm.

“What’s going on?” one of the guards asked as soon as Ianto came into view.

“The General started protocol 18,” Ianto informed, quickly typing the code that would open the cell door. The guard seemed confused by his words. Waters paled visibly.

“You’re lying!” she accused. “He wouldn’t do that, not if I was still inside the building.”

Ianto turned to her with a blank expression and said nothing as Emma started to stutter and finally fell silent, his words hanging heavily in the stale recycled air. He left her to die here. The General betrayed her.

“We have less than five minutes; can you overwrite the security protocols so we can open the doors?” Ianto asked, heading to one of the computer stations in the security post. Waters watched him for a second a little unsure, before finally nodding.

“I think so.” She rushed forward and took the seat in front of the computer Ianto offered her. “But I don’t think I can stop the explosion.”

“Just focus on the doors.” Ianto ordered before she started to work. He turned to the two frightened guards. “Get out of here!”

They didn’t protest, just took off as fast as they could, without looking back. The Welshman glanced at the door, and then at the clock on the far wall; he hoped they had enough time to do this.

“Luke…” he called out quietly and waited for the boy to acknowledge him. “Did Gwen and the others manage to get to the doors?”

“Yes, they just met up with Captain Jack and Dr. Jones.”

“Good.” Ianto smiled a little. Maybe they would be able to get out before this whole thing went to hell.

“Why…” Waters started quietly, glancing sideways at Ianto. “Why did you come back?”

Ianto fingers flew over the keys, his concentration never wavering, not now when he was so close, so close to the end.  “Because there are hundreds of innocent people upstairs that don’t deserve to die just because your boss is a suicidal megalomaniac,” Ianto replied fiercely. “And because I’m not a murderer.”  The “like you” was left unvoiced but no less true.

“Thank you,” Emma choked out.

“Three minutes, Mr. Jones,” Luke warned through the earpiece, and Ianto thanked the boy for interrupting this line of conversation.

“I can’t work any faster,” she said apologetically, and he understood. They were already typing frantically, as fast as humanly possible, but it wasn’t enough. He wished there was something more he could do to help, but his computer’s skills weren’t nearly as good for this level of security.

If only Tosh were here right now...

The things she could do with a computer were just obscene. Ianto smiled to himself at the memory of his lost friend. It didn’t hurt as much anymore to think about her.

His thoughts were interrupted when he felt a distinct change in air pressure.

The hairs at the base of his neck prickled, and he looked up from the screen in front of him to the empty hallway.

A memory of a conversation with Jack...

It sounds like engines, but more melodious. It’s like nothing you’ve ever heard on Earth.

It wasn’t a wooshing sound, exactly, but sort of like that.  And bit metallic and outer-spacey.  Like nothing else he’d ever heard.

Even if you’ve never heard it before, you know it’s him. You just know.

Ianto started moving towards the noise, ignoring Waters’ calls and Luke’s questions.

Some people have said he’s a mad man in a box.

He was lost in that memory and in that sound.

He shows up at the moment you need him the most.  Like an outer space fairy godmother!

Ianto started to run, a smile forming on his face. The last resort had just arrived.

The day he turns up is the best and worst day of your life.

The empty hallway wasn’t empty anymore.

He halted in front of the blue police box just as the skinny, lanky brunette man dressed in a pinstriped suit stepped out; 3-D glasses perched delicately at the end of his nose. He looked at Ianto and grinned.

“Oh, hello Ianto Jones! Long time, no see!” He waved enthusiastically at the Welshman.

“Yes, hello. Come with me.” Ianto hurried back to where Waters and the computer were, knowing the Doctor was following.

“Why the rush? What’s going on?” The Doctor asked way too cheerfully for Ianto’s taste.

“Nothing major really,” Ianto replied deadpan. “The building it going to explode in about three minutes, and people are still trapped inside.”

“Well, that’s not good.” He made a face, but otherwise didn’t seem very concerned. That unsettled Ianto more than anything, more than having the Doctor pop up just at the right second when all hope seemed lost.

They reached the computer room and the Doctor greeted Waters cheerfully before ushering her out of seat and taking her place. The woman turned to look confused at Ianto, but he just waved her off, concentrating on the lanky man in front of the computer.

“Hmm, interesting…” The Doctor hummed, looking at the screen. He had exchanged his 3-D glasses for the pair of regular ones. “The required access is all the way down at root-level...” he muttered more to himself than to anyone else.  “Don’t you worry Mr. Jones, I haven’t met a computer system yet that can’t be opened with the right kind of...encouragement.  And since I don’t see a big red button around anywhere, I’ll just have to get creative.”

The Doctor continued to tap away at the console, mumbling half-strings of words to himself. If Ianto didn’t know any better, he’d say the man in front of him was certifiable.  But based on what Jack has said over the years, Ianto knew this was sort of the Doctor’s trademark.  And, as Jack had told him once, it doesn’t help that half of the things that happen to the Doctor are out of order.  That would be enough to scramble anyone’s brain a bit.

“I wonder what will happen if I do this?” He pulled out his sonic screwdriver, fixed a frequency and pointed at the computer, all the while grinning like a madman at Ianto and Waters. Once he turned the blue light off, the computer beeped and Emma hurried to look.

“He overrode the security measures,” she said in utter shock, looking at the still grinning man. Ianto pressed his hand to his earpiece.

“Luke, try to deactivate the protocol now,” he ordered to the teenager on the other side and was answered by the sound of typing. After only a couple of seconds, the boy cheered.

“The doors are open!”

“Good,” Ianto replied relieved. “Get everyone out of there.”

“You need to get out too. Two minutes.” Ianto turned to the Doctor, who was grinning still.

“Need a ride?” he asked, and this time Ianto returned the grin.

“Yes.”
