Chapter 29

Ianto was gone again.

That was the only thought running repeatedly through his mind as Jack remained on the ground, on his knees. He had been a hair’s breadth to see the Welshman again, to have him alive and well, but now it was too late. He lost Ianto a second time.

The image of the burned building became a black blur as tears filled his eyes. Now, besides being numb and deaf to the world around him, he was also blind.

A hand landed on his shoulder and shook him forcefully. Jack lifted his head in slow motion and blinked away the tears, meeting Martha’s face. The woman grinned at him, her mouth forming words that his brain seemed incapable to register. She pointed to a place in the distance and Jack turned to look.

His heart stopped for a second, before jump-starting into a wild beat. Slowly walking to his direction was a very alive Ianto Jones, three pieces suit and everything. For a second, Jack wondered if he wasn’t hallucinating, but then Ianto was in front of him, taking his hand and pulling him upwards, onto his feet.

Hesitantly, Jack reached forward, cupping Ianto’s cheek with one hand. It felt solid and warm and wonderful and real. A smile blossomed on his face and he pulled the younger man closer, crashing their lips together in a desperate, frantic kiss that Ianto responded in kind, gripping the RAF blue-gray coat as if it was a lifeline. Everything else faded away as they kissed, there were only the two of them together once more, and Jack never wanted to let go--never again. Neither did Ianto.

But the outside world reasserted with the sound of a throat being forcefully cleared right beside them, and reluctantly, they parted. That was when Jack finally caught sign of the grinning Doctor, a face he had been convinced he would never see again. He always felt that way when saying good-bye to the Doctor. He grinned back at the Time Lord, pulling him into a bone crushing hug.

“Always arriving in the nick of time to save everyone,” Jack said laughing and the Doctor laughed too.

“Oh well… You know me!” The two old friends parted again and the Doctor found himself in another tight embrace, this time, from Martha Jones.

“I thought I’d never see you again!” she stated as she pulled away and the Doctor just smiled a little confused, not knowing exactly what she was talking about. And then came Mickey, hugging him too and he got even more confused.

“Why everyone acting as if I was dead?” He met his old companions’ dark and sad glances and grimaced. “Okay, never mind… Spoilers!”

They were all so distracted by the arrival of the Doctor, Ianto and Luke (apparently, the Time Lord had made a quick pit stop by Bannerman Road so the young genius could join his mother and friends), that they didn’t noticed the group of UNIT soldiers until two of them grabbed Ianto by the arms, making to Welshman exclaim in indignation.

“Take your hands off him!” Jack yelled furiously, moving to free Ianto.

“We have orders to escort Mr. Jones back to UNIT. He’s a security risk,” one of the soldiers informed. A lieutenant according to the stripes on his uniform.

“Who gave that order?” Alastair asked as he slowly moved to stand besides the Doctor. The young lieutenant paled slightly at the sight of the Brigadier.

“Colonel Oduya, sir.”

“Ianto is Torchwood, he’s coming with me!” Jack replied fiercely, all but tearing the offending hands from around Ianto’s arm. The Welshman almost rolled his eyes at Jack’s caveman possessiveness display.

“Except, Torchwood doesn’t exist anymore, Captain Harkness.” They all startled when the tall, stocky black military man appeared by his soldiers, his eyes staring venomously at Jack, before moving to the Doctor and finally, towards the Brigadier. He quick saluted the elderly more out of appearances than respect. “Mr. Jones will be safer with UNIT.”

“That’s bollocks!” Gwen shouted angrily. Like Jack, she wasn’t willing to let Ianto go when they just got him back. “You’ll just open him up like a lab rat, like those people did!”

“I’m afraid you have no choice.” Colonel Oduya replied sternly. “Now that Mr. Jones has, in his body, extremely sensitive alien technology, we have to assure that it won’t fall on the wrong hands, which means Mr. Jones has to remain under UNIT jurisdiction.”

“Actually…” Ianto spoke for the first time, making everyone turn to face him. He was completely calm and not worried at the slightest and Jack had to force himself not to smile. He got a feeling Ianto was about to sort all of this mess. He was extremely good at that. “I am to remain under the protection of any organization protecting the Earth and fighting off alien threats, according to the Queen. Torchwood falls under that category.” He pulled out from his jacket pocket a couple of sheets of paper neatly folded and handed them to Sir Alastair.

“According to this…as long as Captain Harkness doesn’t formally resign from his position, he remains the Director of Torchwood 3, the only still existing branch of the Torchwood Institute.”

“The Torchwood Institute does not exist anymore!” Colonel Oduya replied loosing is temper. “Their base of operations has been destroyed!”

“And who do we have to thank for that?” Jack commented with hatred and anger. He remembered very well the explosion that destroyed the place he called home for the last couple of centuries and it pained him greatly.

“Actually…” Again, Ianto stepped in; this time he had a small smirking tugging on the corner of his lips. “You will find out that Torchwood 3’s base of operations has been rebuilt under the orders of the Queen and the Prime Minister.” The Doctor grinned at the bewildered expressions of their audience.

“We made a quick pit stop at Buckingham Palace for tea.” The Time Lord grinned. Luke, who was standing a few steps away with Sarah Jane, Clyde and Rani, grinned too.

“I met the Queen,” he stated simply, receiving a chuckle from his mother and bewildered stares from his friends. “She’s really nice.”

“That’s all settled then,” The Doctor announced cheerfully. “Ianto stays with Jack and Torchwood. Lizzy’s orders.” He turned around, completely ignoring Oduya angry stare and focusing instead on the gathering of friends and allies all around him. He clapped his hands together with all the excitement of a child at Christmas’ morning. “Now! Who wants to meet the new Torchwood Headquarters?”

With matching grins, Martha, Mickey and Sarah Jane led the way towards the TARDIS, all anxious for one last trip at the ship. Clyde, Luke and Rani followed next, pulling Alonso and Mackenzie along. For the first time since Jack had pulled her out of McLeod Enterprise’s building, the young doctor opened her mouth to speak. “We won’t fit in there,” She said confused and shocked as they headed towards an old fashioned blue police box. The young man at her side looked just as bewildered and doubtful, but since she had trusted them all this time, Mackenzie didn’t see the point to stop doing it now. She followed them through and was shocked to see the ample space.

“It’s bigger on the inside,” Jack stated with a wicked smirk, one arm around Ianto, the other around Gwen, who was looking around as overwhelmed and surprised as Mackenzie felt.

As his eyes landed on Alonso, the captain immediately felt something clench inside him. During all this, he had focused on one thing and one thing only: to find Ianto. Now that the Welshman was back on his arms, he had to wonder what would happen to Alonso. He had come to Earth because of Jack. He had gotten himself in all sorts of danger to help Jack retrieve his past lover, in a completely and utterly altruistic manner. Jack felt horrible. Now that he was faced with the decision, he wasn’t willing to let go of Ianto, but he also didn’t want to hurt Alonso.

Alonso turned around and met the older man’s gaze. His blue eyes were serene and content and his smile was soft and understanding. Alonso’s whole expression was telling Jack that it was okay. That he understood. That he wasn’t hurt. At least, not as much as the captain assumed he would be. Jack smiled back thankful. He had always known that he could have come to love Alonso in time and if he didn’t love Ianto as much as he did already. That quietly shared moment just confirmed his suspicions.

The Doctor was the last to step into the TARDIS, closing the door after himself and heading straight to the controls of his ship. The air inside the main room was cheerful and light and the Time Lord felt exceptionally good because of it. He turned on the engines and typed the coordinates.

“Alright! Torchwood 3 headquarters, Cardiff, Wales, here we go!” he announced cheerfully. “Grab on something!”

The ship rocked and bumped, sending everyone in search for something to hold on to. For those who had previously experienced this way of travelling, the movements were welcomed and greatly missed. For the first-timers, it was a little startling and disturbing, but just as fast as it had started, it was over and the ship found stability again. Ianto shared a quick smile with the Doctor and headed for the door, opening it for all of them.

“Welcome to the new Torchwood Hub,” he announced in a deep formal voice, waiting for everyone to exit the TARDIS.

Jack was the first to step into the newly rebuilt Hub and the sight of it hit him like a punch in the gut, dragging all air out of his lungs. It was perfect. Identical to the original one, with a few minor, but noticeable changes, the biggest one was the wall that was decorated with the name Torchwood.  Now, right beneath the black lettering it held a big photo wall with pictures of old Torchwood employees. Toshiko and Owen were in the center, right bellow the phrase: those who have fallen. Jack felt tears burning on his eyes at the sight of the two faces, but Ianto’s supportive hand on his shoulder made things feel a little better.

“I was surprised to learn that the damage of the explosion wasn’t as bad as it seemed that day. The cells, vaults, cryogenic chambers and the Archives were intact. The blast only took out the main part of the Hub.” Ianto explained as Gwen looked around, a happy, teary grin touching her face while the others looked awed.

“It’s wonderful!” Gwen exclaimed excitedly after a moment.

“Good.” Ianto smiled. “It took me nine months of hard work to get it just right.”

Gwen looked around and back at Ianto, a torrent of questions about to fall from her mouth.

Jack laughed, glancing at Ianto, and then at the Doctor, who just winked. “Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey,” he said, earning himself an even more confused stared. “Time doesn’t run in a straight line, Gwen. And with the aid of a time machine just like the Doctor’s, Ianto managed to do his magic and fix all this for us.”

“Systems are all up and running,” Ianto continued, smiling a little at the praise. “Thanks to Luke.” He sent the younger boy a grin, who just shrugged. “And Agatha promised me she would send all usable materials from Torchwood 2 after she shuts down the base for good.”

“All we need now is a pet pteranodon and we’re back in business,” Jack replied with a grin, making Gwen laugh.

“Actually, we’re a little short-staffed.” Ianto informed. “We still need a doctor.” His eyes turning pointedly at Mackenzie. The young doctor looked back wide-eyed. Jack just nodded his approval.

“What do you say Mac?” he asked. “Wanna work for us, or did you have your alien quota for the rest of your life? I’ll tell you now: the hours are long, the job is hard and dangerous, most of the Cardiff government hates us on general principle, and you’ll be lucky if you can get through one meal a week uninterrupted.  But you’ll experience things that you never dreamed of, see the universe in a whole new way, and if you’re good and fill out all of your paperwork on time, you’ll taste the most orgasmic coffee in the known universe.”

Ianto had to choke down a laugh.

Jack has a sparkle in his eye she’d never noticed before. Gwen smiled at her. “How does it sound, working in a science fiction super-base and saving the world?”

“I-I…” she stammered, looking around with a mix of fascination and fear. “Can I think about it?” Jack nodded with an understanding smile. It was just a bit too much to take.

“I guess it’s all back to normal, huh?” Gwen spoke, running a hand over the desk it would be hers. “Just another day at work.”

“It’s not all done yet.” Jack interrupted, an angry frown marrying his face. “We still don’t know who Sam’s partner is. Who’s the bastard that orchestrated all this using Owen’s name.”

“Jack,” the Doctor called out in warning. “Let it go. It will be dealt with when the time comes.”

“I can’t just let it go.”

“You should. Just be happy for the moment. Enjoy,” he instructed with a smile and watched as Jack turned to face Ianto for a moment, before nodding. If he went after Sam’s partner, he would have to leave Earth again; he’d have to give up Ianto when he just found the man. He wasn’t ready for that just yet.

“Fine,” he relented begrudgingly, and the Time Lord grinned.

“All aboard! I’ll take everyone home.”

Slowly, everyone said their goodbyes to Jack and Ianto (Gwen was going too since Rhys was still waiting at Sarah Jane’s.) and headed back to the TARDIS. Alonso was at the door when Jack called out his name, making him pause. The Captain glanced back at Ianto for a second, looking for permission, but the Welshman just shrugged. He faced Alonso once more, moving to stand before him, just a couple feet of space between them.

“You could stay for a while; I’ll show you around the Earth.” He smiled a little ruefully. “Or at least around Cardiff. Show you where to get some REAL chips.”

Alonso smiled and shook his head. “Maybe another time, yeah?” The younger man leaned over, pressing a chaste kiss against Jack’s lips. “It was good to meet you, Captain.”

“Thank you for everything, Alonso.” Jack said, tears shining on his eyes. He was going to miss him. Alonso just smiled sadly at him, his eyes gazing past Jack’s shoulder.

“Take care of him.”

“I will.” Ianto replied with a nod.

With those words, Alonso finally entered the TARDIS, closing the door behind himself. Jack stood back and watched as the ship faded away, with Ianto standing besides him, right where he belonged.

When they were completely alone, Jack turned look Ianto, a happy smile shining on his face. The Welshman grinned back, just as happy, before Jack pulled him closer for a tight hug. He felt the wetness against his neck as his captain silently cried. Ianto said nothing, just held on.

“I thought I’d lost you,” Jack gasped after a several minutes.

“For a moment, you did,” Ianto replied quietly, pulling back only enough to look into Jack’s eyes and dry his tears. “But I’m here now and I’m not going anywhere.”

“Good.” The captain smiled and leaned in to capture Ianto’s lip in a kiss.

The End

So this is it! It's finally over!

To tell the true I'm last than satisfied with this ending, but it will have to do for the time being.

Maybe I'll get back to Torchwood fandom and write something more, but for now, bye Captain Jack Harkness, heeeeeeello Colonel John Sheppard! LOL
