Masterlist 48. Speaking in Riddles
Merlin is pretty lousy at these kinds of formal events, but things were going remarkably well and uneventful. She had moved around and chatted with some people and probably impressed one or two members of the selection board.
During the entire party Arthur had been at her side, something that she was very thankful for. He was a calming presence and whenever she was unsure what to say, he would step in for the rescue.
It hadn’t hurt either the look of pure rage that Sophia shot Merlin when she walked with an arm linked with the blonde. She had rejoiced at it and even managed a smirk at Sophia’s direction without Arthur noticing.
It’s almost the end of the evening now and Merlin takes a minute to wander around the garden of the mansion. Arthur stays inside, chatting with one of his friends from the soccer team. It’s good to be alone for a moment. She could organize her head once more.
“Well, well Merlin my dear, you haven’t changed a bit, but yet, you are completely different since the last time we’ve met.”
The man who had spoken was tall and strong, around his sixties, with grey hair and profound green-yellowish eyes.
Merlin looks at his warm smile with wide eyes of surprise. The man in from of her is no one other that Johnathan Drake, the CEO of Drake’s Association. And for some reason he seemed to think he knew her. And the weird thing is, he was kind of familiar to Merlin.
“Don’t you recognize me?” He asks with a hint of amusement. “I guess I looked rather different from the last time. Much less… reptilian.”
Merlin’s jaw drops dramatically and her eyes widen almost comically. No way! That was…
“The Great Dragon?” She squeaks still shocked. Drake chuckles and nods. “Oh my frakking God!”
“Your reaction amuses me every time.” He says with another chuckle.
“Every time?” Merlin squeaks again. “What do you mean every time?”
“You didn’t really think this was the first time you reincarnated, did you?” Drake asks wisely.
“But I don’t….”
“Remember? Yes, well, isn’t bad enough to have two sets of memories? Would you really want more? It would drive you crazy, young warlock. Or should I say witch now?”
Merlin thinks for a moment. The man-dragon was probably right. Other memories would definitely drive her insane.
“How many times did I reincarnate?”
“I stopped counting 5 centuries ago.” Drake answers with a shrug.
“Oh.” Merlin says still shocked, but right now she doesn’t know with what. “Why?”
“Why you reincarnated so many times?” He asks with a smirk. “You know why.”
Merlin turns to the general direction of the main room where the party is happening, where Arthur is.
“You’re quite right. You come back every time the young Pendragon does. You two are eternally connected.”
“Two sides of a coin.” Merlin says with a sigh and the man chuckles.
“And it only took you a thousand years to understand that.”
That earns him a glare, but her annoyance doesn’t last long. There were still too many things to ask.
“It’s this the first time I come back as… you know, a girl?” She asks awkwardly. This is probably the question that had haunted her mind since she remembered.
“No. After the three lives, you decided it would be easier to be with Arthur if you were a girl.”
“Do we always end up together? Me and Arthur?” Merlin asks with a hint of uncertainty. Drake looks sad for a second.
“Always is a treacherous word.” No. that’s what he meant.
“Why everyone else is around, but doesn’t remember? Why am I the only one who remembers?” This is another question that always bothered Merlin.
“Well, some say that souls travel together when they reincarnate.” Drake replies thoughtful. “As for the other question, you also know the answer for it.”
“I’m magic.” Merlin states under a resigned sigh.
“Yes. That’s why.” Drake says.
“So Arthur will never remember.” That’s a hint of pain in her tone. He smiles reassuring.
“There’s more to the young Pendragon than you know, Merlin. You’ll find that soon enough.”
Merlin rolls her eyes.
“Some things never change huh? Back at speaking in riddles.” Drake just chuckles.
“And you always the impatient one.” He smiles warmly at her. “I must be going now, young witch, but I hope we meet again soon. Take care.”
“Bye.” Merlin says, watching him go, frustrated. Sure he had answered a few of her questions, but he left her other ones and those were even more confusing and complicated.

part 49 This was a pretty long chapter, but I hope some things are clear now about this story!
