I get home from work today. There are two packages on the front steps, so I grab the mail thats sitting out and open the door. Surprisingly Jim and the cats were waiting on the other side. I closed the door and grabed the package, and opened it to come in. As I do Arwen darts out.
Jim and I chase after her, as she darts around the front yard, under the cars, and finially settles under our back porch. She's not coming out even after being tempted with her favorite toy and canned cat food. After weighing our options, we decide to keep our dinner plans and let her a taste of the cold weather. (The chase part is abrivated, trust me when I say we TRIED to catch her)
We come back home after dinner, and she's not to happy, she hisses when Jim picks her up, but she doesn't run away either. We leave her inside and head out to a movie. The minute we arrive home, she darts out again. (Different door, and this time Jim opened it). Jim's pissed at her by now, and is like fine she wants to stay out in the cold she can stay out all night.
I started this blog entry to ask what would you do? Leave her out or chase after her? but while I'm writing this, I hear a whining at the door. I go open it and Arwen comes scampering in.
But what do I do when this happens again? Just leave her? Is there something I can do to punish her to make her get this is not acceptable behavior?
My personal opinion is the cats which are pets should be kept inside, unless supervised or leased (or both), but I cann't prevent her from running out. I feel responsible for her welfare, so I really want to go hunt her down and drag her back home, but sometimes, like tonight its not really feasable, and I think its feeding into her running out, because when she does she gets lots of attention. (I'm trying my best atm to ignore her as punishment, just for the night).
We're getting a storm door installed on the front door tommorrow, and Arwen darting out was one of many reasons we decided to do it. But she is going to get out again.
