Disclaimer: I don't own Hawaii Five-O and am making no money off of the following story.

She shifts her weight from one foot to the other, studying the face of the man before her.

She's working hard to perfect her profiling skills. Chin's told her few people are naturals and that it simply takes practice. So she's letting Danny ask most of the questions while she observes. He twitches and Kono's face wrinkles in concentration. A sign of guilt?

Someone guns their engine on the street behind them. She doesn't pay much attention-idiots are everywhere-but a heartbeat later, there's a rattling bang. She reacts, but a split second too late for Danny. His weight catches her square in the back. She tumbles down, sprawled beneath him. Her bare hands, elbow, and chin cry in protest as they scratch the concrete. She's used to surfing through the pain and compartmentalizes, focusing on the shooter. They roll apart in unison, hands securing weapons. There's panicked screaming from all around, and, above that, the sound of the shooter's car revving away.

“I guess he didn't want us to talk to Turner,” muses Danny wryly, glancing down at the body of their (former) suspect.

There are no other injuries, just panicked passerbyers, and Steve's insisting Danny get his still-healing-knee checked out by the paramedics. Her boss catches her eye and nods her over. “You, too.”

She doesn't want to, but senses it's not worth the argument. Especially since Danny's trying to convey “humor him” with a little eye roll and a shrug Steve's direction. Steve's in one of his moods, as per usual, and won't be crossed. As soon as she comes over, he's off, shouting directions over his shoulder to finish up securing the scene with HPD and then to head back to HQ. She slides into a sitting position on the stretcher beside Danny and lets the paramedic assess her injuries.

“You ok?” Danny asks quietly.

She nods. She's more annoyed that the guy got away-although not for long; Chin and Steve have already left in pursuit-than she is hurt. She's seen and felt worse. Her pride hurts more than the shove and she feels the need to impress upon Danny that she's not going to slow him down in the field because she's new.

“Thanks for having my back out there. Next time, I'll get yours.”

He shrugs and smiles at her. “I know you will.” She smiles back, pride soothed.
