The fabric around Seohyun’s neck feels like a scarlet A. Seohyun has to fight the instinct to shrink back from every look she gets as she walks into the office, trying to convince herself that she isn’t actually broadcasting FANGBANGER with every step. Nobody says anything to her, though, and by the time she gets to her desk Seohyun is starting to relax. She even manages to sound cheerful when she says hello to Sooyoung.

Then Eunmi bounces over and exclaims, in her usual bubbly way, “Wow, unnie, you look adorable!” She tilts her head. “Isn’t it a little warm for a scarf, though?”

“Oh, I just-I mean, it’s-I really thought this outfit needed it,” Seohyun stammers, but it’s too late. Sooyoung tenses next to her, her smile no longer reaching her eyes, and Seohyun flinches away. Even Eunmi can feel the change in atmosphere, making an excuse and hurrying off. Seohyun pretends to hunt for something in her bag to avoid meeting Sooyoung’s eyes; luckily, Sooyoung’s called away by the editor a moment later, but she leaves with a glare at Seohyun that clearly says they’ll talk later.

Seohyun’s luck doesn’t last long, though. She goes to the bathroom after an hour, and when she comes out of the stall Sooyoung is leaning against a sink with her arms crossed, clearly waiting for her. Seohyun swallows hard. “Hi.”

“Let me see.”

There’s no point in trying to deny it, so Seohyun pulls her scarf off. Sooyoung sucks in a breath at the dark purple bruise on her neck, reaching out and brushing gentle fingers across it. Seohyun grimaces at the twinge of pain.

“I told you,” Sooyoung hisses, her eyes wide and scared. “I told you that you couldn’t trust her, you can’t trust any of them, and she-”

“No, Sooyoung, it’s okay,” Seohyun tells her. “I asked her to. I wanted to know what it felt like.”

Sooyoung stares at her. “You did what?”

“It was for research!” Seohyun adds. “I was just trying to-”

Sooyoung slaps her. “You are a stupid, stupid girl,” she bites out. Seohyun presses a hand to her burning cheek, mouth open. “What if she’d bonded you?”

“She wouldn’t do that,” Seohyun mutters, her other cheek growing hot with anger and embarrassment, but she knows Sooyoung is right.

“If you really think that then you deserve to-” Sooyoung cuts herself off. Her jaw clenches for a long moment, and finally she says in a measured voice, “Do you know what could have happened if she’d gotten access to your mind? You could have ruined everything, Seohyun.”

“She didn’t take that much,” Seohyun insists stubbornly. “And I would have noticed if she’d tried to give me her blood, you know I would have.”

“And if she’d started torturing you?” Sooyoung snaps. “She’s five hundred years old, Seohyun, I think she knows a few tricks!”

“Well she didn’t!” Seohyun’s throat is closing up, but she won’t let herself cry. Not like this.

Sooyoung’s expression softens, and she pulls Seohyun into a hug. Her hands shake violently against Seohyun’s back, and Seohyun realizes that Sooyoung’s on the verge of tears herself. “I’m sorry. I just-Jesus, Seohyun.”

“I didn’t mean to scare you,” Seohyun mumbles.

“I know. I know.” Sooyoung takes a deep breath and pulls away. She brushes Seohyun’s hair back from her face and frowns at the red mark high on her cheekbone. “I shouldn’t have hit you.”

Seohyun looks down. “It’s okay.”

“No it isn’t. But it’s done now, I suppose.” Sooyoung sighs, taking a step back and pats her clothing into place. “Take a few minutes and get yourself in order, okay? We don’t need people asking what happened.”

Seohyun nods and watches Sooyoung turn away. When she puts her hand on the door, Seohyun blurts, “You won’t tell Taeyeon, will you?”

Sooyoung pauses, then shakes her head. “Just don’t do it again.”

Taeyeon doesn’t say anything to Seohyun when she turns in her report, which Seohyun takes to mean that Sooyoung kept her word. Still, Seohyun forces herself to keep her distance. Sunny doesn’t contact her at all for the first week, and when Seohyun does finally get a text, all it says is, Doing okay? Seohyun texts back that she is, but that she just needs a little bit of time.

Understandable, Sunny responds. But I’m going to be out of the country for a while, so if you want to meet before then it has to be soon.

Seohyun closes her eyes and thinks of Sunny’s smile, of the way her hand had curved around Seohyun’s hip as she leaned in-and then of the pain. She gasps out loud and drops her phone, which splits open when it hits the floor. Cursing, Seohyun bends down and slots the battery back into place; luckily, it still turns on when she presses the power button.

By the time Sunny’s text pops up again, Seohyun knows what she’s going to say.

“She’s not going to hurt you,” Seohyun mutters to herself as she turns off her car. “She likes you. You’re-interesting.” Just don’t ever turn boring.

Sunny’s already at the table, as usual, and she waves Seohyun over with a smile. “How are you holding up?” she asks once Seohyun sits down. “I’m impressed you still wanted to meet up, honestly.”

Seohyun shrugs. “It’s my job.” She winces and adds quickly, “Not that I don’t want to see you!”

Sunny throws her head back and laughs. “God, you’re cute.”

Seohyun’s cheeks go hot. “I don’t try to be.”

“No, see, that’s what makes it better, that you don’t even realize it.” Sunny leans forward, her eyes catching the light. “I could just eat you up.”

Seohyun is standing at the edge of the table with her bag in hand before she’s even realized that she’s moved. “I-Sorry,” she stammers.

“No, I’m sorry, it was a bad joke.” Sunny has half-risen out of her own seat, but now she sinks back down. “It’s okay, I promise.”

“I’m just…I’ll be right back,” Seohyun says, and fairly flees to the bathroom.

She splashes water on her face when she gets there and stares at her hands, trying to will them into no longer shaking. “It’s okay,” she says out loud. “You saw the look on her face, it was just a joke. I mean, it was a bad joke-a really bad joke-but it’s fine, she’s not going to do anything.” It takes her a few minutes to compose herself, but when she finally steps back outside it’s with a pleasant smile that evaporates when she sees what’s going on at the table.

There’s a girl sitting next to Sunny, leaning in close with a hand on her arm. Sunny’s got that half-amused smirk on her face that means she likes what she’s hearing, and Seohyun feels a stab of something that cannot possibly be jealousy go through her. “Hi,” she says loudly when she gets close. Sunny’s expression turns to concern, and she opens her mouth to say something, but Seohyun is busy staring at the girl. Her hair is long and her cheeks a little sunken, her eyes dark with kohl, but it’s definitely-”Krystal?”

“Shit,” Krystal mutters, pushing herself out of her seat.

“What are you doing here? Tiffany’s been worried sick-”

“Fuck off, Seohyun,” Krystal snaps, but Seohyun grabs her arm before she can leave.

“No, you’re coming with me.” Seohyun reaches one-handed into her purse and pulls her phone out from its pocket, already pushing the number to speed dial Tiffany. “Sorry,” she says to Sunny, “I need to take her home.”

Sunny’s eyes are narrowed, and she looks from Krystal to Seohyun and back again. “Who is she?”

“A friend of mine takes care of her, but she’s been missing for weeks. It’s a long story.”

“Don’t talk about me like I’m not here!” Krystal snarls.

Sunny stands. “Krystal, right?” She licks her lips, and Krystal’s eyes go to the flash of her fangs. “What did you say your last name was?”

“Does it really matter?” Krystal shakes Seohyun’s hand off her arm and pulls herself up a little taller, tilting her head to the side.

“Oh for God’s sake.” Seohyun pulls Krystal’s hair over her neck with the hand not holding her phone to her ear, glaring at Sunny. “Stop encouraging her. And you,” she says to Krystal. “You’re coming with me.”

“I’d go with her if I were you,” Sunny says mildly. Krystal’s face twists as she looks between them, but finally she huffs and crosses her arms over her chest. Sunny turns to Seohyun. “Some other time, then.”

Seohyun nods. “Sorry again. I’ll-Tiffany! I found Krystal, I’m bringing her to you.” She leads Krystal through the crowd and out to the parking lot. “What was your address again?”

With her back turned, she doesn’t notice the way Sunny’s eyes follow them.
