Summary: A little story about a couple that was separated due to the road that life chose to walk. In which Sungmin is a good son with tendencies to suffer acute tendonitis and Kyuhyun is just the usual, Starcraft addicted nerd we know.
When Kyuhyun left for his studies, Sungmin was holding his hands at the airport. They promised to call each other every day, Skype every second day and visit each other on holidays. But it wasn't that short of a distance between South Korea and Japan and they knew it.
Promises were sweet and comforting, but didn't we know it? Deep down in our hearts, somewhere there, we knew it.
Sungmin felt his forced smile dropping as soon as Kyuhyun left for the security check. His heart felt heavy and there was an uncomfortable, big something in his throat that made it hard to breath or even swallow. He turned on his heels, legs moving almost mechanically on their own. He was late for work.
It hurt to see you leaving.
Kyuhyun barely registered how his plane took off, even the short incident including a thief getting caught while trying to snatch the purse of an elder, honorable looking woman. His mind was somewhere else, just in front of the airport where he had been standing about one hour ago and where a certain someone was now waiting for a cab.
His lips curved into an unconscious smile as he imagined how Sungmin would be standing there all alone, hands probably held in chest height, head turning from left to right, chin lifted to get a better view of the surrounding while his face certainly had this clueless, innocent look of actual inner concentration. Lips parted, eye brows in a frown and cheeks tinted from that ever so adorable flush of slight irritation.
He didn't know why he was smiling thinking of it.
I don't know why it was that hard.
Sungmin had tons of paperwork to do, thanks to Donghae who had called the office in the morning, claiming he was sick. Tonsillitis. Jungsu, their boss, had decided that Lee Sungmin was the right person to manually copy the tax return for Mrs. Kim in the second district. It had to be manually. Park Jungsu hated modern technology (We can't let machines replace the human race!) and even though he was a very capable tax accountant and boss, his employees sometimes had the urge to jump out of the window when another, easily made, mistake occurred. The numbers were listed in tiny, narrow boxes and it was close to a miracle when an employee managed to copy a tax return or some other paper work without making a mistake.
But we promised.
Kyuhyun had a rather shy smile on his lips when he bowed in front of his new teachers and classmates. He had the feeling that Japanese people were very polite and friendly. On his very first day at school, he already met another exchange student named Zhou Mi and they quickly got along; not only because they were both foreign in Japan. Kyuhyun decided that it was a good start into these two years he would be spending on Tokyo University where he got a scholarship.
And you called.
Sungmin was living in a small apartment in the middle of Seoul. Beside him, two other people were holding keys to his flat: his best friend Hyukjae and Kyuhyun. When he came home after a long day of work, it felt amazing to just fall into his bed and feel how the soft cushion was giving in under his weight. When he wasn't too tired, there were days when he and Kyuhyun went out for dinner; or he would go for a drink with Hyukjae, talking about life and love; or he would call his parents and ask them about their day. He was a good son after all.
I missed you so much. Your voice was helping me over the first few weeks.
Kyuhyun had to hide tears of relief and happiness when he finally had found a flat that wasn't out of his range payment-wise, a flat that wasn't two hours away from University and even one where the neighbors seemed to be decent people who weren't looking at him like murderers or rapers. He gave Zhou Mi a key to his home 'for cases of emergency' and kept yet two in his pockets. On his free Friday, he put the second spare key into an envelope and sent it to Sungmin.
Our talks turned into nothing more than the usual 'How's work?', 'How's school?' and 'How's life?'.
Sungmin began to put more effort into work. Maybe he could even get a promotion? A pay raise? He had so much free time now, Kyuhyun was in Japan and busy with his own studies. And a pay raise definitely had a nice ring in his ears. His parents were coming over from time to time and he always had to smile when he was listening to his mother praising the, for a man, unusual tidy condition of his room. There were also days when Hyukjae came over with a bag full of sashimi and then they would watch a movie together. It wasn't even that bad.
I felt that something was missing. Our relationship was so much more than just words.
Kyuhyun was still an top student. In his free time, Zhou Mi sometimes managed to drag him to the shopping mall where Kyuhyun would make fun of haute couture while Zhou Mi was spending thousands of dollars on haute couture. He had relaxing evenings after finishing work for classes; Starcraft was a worthy opponent against utter boredom. Zhou Mi was also the one who would make him eat properly and enough. Kyuhyun was thankful for having such a good friend.
I could hear how your voice was sounding different with each day passing. It wasn't the same.
Sungmin had days when he was almost late to work. He didn't know how this could happen, he was such a neat and reliable person. Then he remembered the nights he spent awake, thinking. He was slowly, but sure turning into a mess, his kitchen soon looking not that tidy anymore. He made more mistakes when manually copying tax returns and Jungsu noticed it. There was a worried expression on the older man's face as he saw one of his best employees changing for the worse.
It was giving me headaches because I wanted it to work.
Kyuhyun sometimes called his parents. They were busy people which is why he usually didn't like to bother them, but being in another country was a good excuse. He began to feel bored watching ridiculous carnival costumes with Zhou Mi, so he spent more time with Starcraft. He was sometimes tired at class, sometimes even being almost late because he spent a big part of his nights playing Starcraft. But he also felt how more and more of his homework was incorrect, incomplete or not even done; he was distracted by thinking too much. It was not about Starcraft though. He wondered how that could happen, he had always been an excellent and ambitious student.
We were keeping the promise, but it didn't seem enough. We were too tired to Skype most of the times anyway.
Sungmin used to sleep with one blanket when Kyuhyun was still there. Now, that the other man was gone, he slept with two blankets. It was slowly turning colder, the leaves were falling in the most beautiful shades of gold, orange and yellow. Sometimes, Sungmin just looked out of the window and watched the leaves falling and covering the streets before cars were running over it, turning most of these colors into an unidentifiable, brown something. It seemed so brutal to him.
I thought about you more than I did when we were still close to each other. Is it worry?
Kyuhyun cursed the heater in his apartment complex for breaking at the most unfitting time ever. He had to ask Zhou Mi for an electric heater but in the night, when he was trying to sleep, he sighed because it still was too cold. He decided to have a serious talk with that damn craftsman who was way too late for fixing the damage. When he was alone in his room, he also cursed the view out of his window because it was unpleasant: Just the gray wall from another apartment complex across the street. Most of the times he looked out of the window, there was also gray fog in the air, he was in Tokyo after all. Gray, gray, gray.
But I didn't want it to end like this. I didn't want to end it at all.
Sungmin decided that it was time for a break. He asked Jungsu to give him a few days off and his boss was just waiting for him to ask that one question. Sungmin knew that Kyuhyun would try to call him in the evening, when he was already gone, but he was sure that Kyuhyun would understand.
I thought you were tired of me.
Kyuhyun had enough of Tokyo. He knew that he had to do something about the inner emptiness he was constantly feeling. He had to get out of that City. He was sure that Sungmin wouldn't mind if he wasn't calling him in the evening. Sungmin would understand.
But I didn't want you to question anything between us.
Sungmin felt a lot better when he felt the plane taking off. One last time, he checked his mental To-Do-List again. He had called Hyukjae and had asked him to take care of his plants. He had locked the door. He had left the note on the table. He had turned off the stove, the lights, the water. His hand was enclosing the cold, little piece of metal in his pocket. He knew that he couldn't ever let go of it.
Was it impossible?
Kyuhyun was late for the Check-In. He was colorfully swearing Korean curses in the cab and the Japanese driver had been giving him weird looks. He made it, just when his name was announced over the public address system. He was sweaty and panting and he remembered that he had forgotten to turn off the lights in the bathroom but he didn't care because he was just glad to be in time. He smiled when he received his boarding pass.
Even though I think we knew it right from the start.
Sungmin had a quite boring flight. The only interesting thing was the other plane he had seen when he had been looking out of the window, just about half-way. He had never seen another plane while being on a flight before. But that was it, actually. He was just relieved to finally arrive. Sungmin inhaled the foreign air and immediately had to cough. He knew that Seoul air wasn't the cleanest in the world, but what was this? A long sigh escaped his lips.
It was obvious.
Kyuhyun sarcastically deemed himself as lucky when he saw the fat woman on the seat next to his who was occupying half of his own seat, too. He was lucky to be rather lean. He cursed another time when he realized that he had forgotten his iPod at home. The corpulent woman glared at him. He mentally smacked himself when he noticed that it shouldn't be a surprise to him.
Didn't we both know it?
Sungmin congratulated himself for being awesome. He had arrived at his destination in a foreign country, without having any big trouble. He looked up the strange, huge building, at least twenty floors high. So, this...?
But I knew that I still had something to say.
Kyuhyun grinned as he saw things he was much more comfortable with than similar things he had seen in Japan. He called a cab and soon arrived. He got out and paid the driver way too much. But he didn't care.
And I knew that I couldn't say it on the phone like we always did.
Sungmin helped a woman with a walking frame into the elevator, taking in her shopping bags, too. He had a little talk with her and they were both laughing when they left the elevator.
But things decided to turn out differently.
Kyuhyun was taking two steps at the same time, one hand embracing a key in his pocket as he excitedly ran up the stairs.
And
Sungmin was standing in front of a door.
I
Kyuhyun was looking for the right key among the bunch of keys.

Sungmin ungracefully put the key, covered in sweat of excitement into the key hole.

Kyuhyun turned the key and pushed the door open.

Sungmin stormed into the flat, not even taking his time to look at the furniture or anything else.

Sungmin took out his phone but an incoming call prevented him from dialing a number.
We were lucky, yes.
Kyuhyun was still laughing as he was trying to maintain his compositor on the phone. He heard the person on the other line laughing, too, and he sat down on the kitchen chair.
This time I heard your voice
Sungmin couldn't help it, it wasn't something he should be laughing at, but he was laughing, happily even. He sat down on the bed.
I heard your laugh and you weren't like you were over the past months.
Kyuhyun looked around and no word had been exchanged over the phone yet, just joyful laughter.
In that very moment,
“And you still have that plushy bunny collection. I can't believe it.”
I just knew it.
“You bought yet another MacBook, seriously?”
We both knew it.
“Sungmin.”
It was obvious, right from the start.
“Kyuhyun.”
A Long-distance relationship sucks. It really does. But I knew that it was you and me. And when I heard your laugh on the phone with us being in such a ridiculous and hilarious situation, sitting on beds and kitchen chairs, I just knew it.
“I love you.”
And that was all that mattered.
A/N: To be honest, I got this idea from a Naruto fic. This idea came in the last chapter of a SasuNaru fanfiction named Heaven's Garden by YellowxRed makes Orange. It's a fic that isn't as awesome as a lot of things I read in the HunHan fandom, nor is it as deep as some stuff I read in the KyuMin fandom, yet I still really appreciate it because it's sweet and SasuNaru. And Highschool!AU omg. I'm simple minded like that.
