The university system that we know of here doesn't exist in my world. [A pause here.] But there are some similarities. There was a single institution in the city of Aspio that could have qualified as 'higher education', if even, but it was mainly dedicated to the study of blastia and related topics. Smaller educational institutions were scattered ( Read more... )

It's weird, isn't it? I didn't think that there would ever be something like a school here.

Are you going?

It's actually considered normal for a school to be here. You realized how this place is a reflection of somebody's design of an every-day world?

But... I can't say for certain yet. If I'm going or not.

I guess so. I mean...schools are normal, but it never seemed like this place needed one.

And why not give it a try? School can be fun, and you might learn something.

[This is Rita. Pause. Consider.]

Maybe.

There're idiots here. I'd say this place needed one more than ever.

[Pffft.]

Yeah, it's that 'maybe' I'm considering here. Honestly speaking, I doubt I'll learn anything I didn't know already, but... there're always new schools of thought, you know? I need to take that into consideration.

[He laughs.]

Well...school can't teach everything, but it might help, maybe.

[And he nods.]

New experiences are always good, anyway, even if they turn out badly.

[loldissection.]

[A shrug.]

We're thinking along the same lines, then. But I'm weighing the pros and cons against leaving my research to go off and learn something potentially useless at the university construct. Because if I'm committing myself to a classroom all day, I'm not going to have time to complete the things I need to complete.

...Well, if you aren't learning anything, then just stop going.

[Spain is a stunning influence, I know.]

... for these institutions, you have to pay money.

...Really? Why do you have to pay to go to school?

Because some idiot figured that turning school into a business enterprise with education as the selling point could make a lot of money. And he was right.

That...isn't very fair. If you want to learn, you should be able to.

Generally, it's like that. For the lower level educations, at least. When you get to university, though, it's a whole other corporation. Part of the reason why I didn't bother with it before, and it's just making it unappealing now.

I'm guessing you've never attended university either, huh.

[He thinks for a moment.]

Well...a long time ago, Al-Andalus really liked the idea of university, so I went for a little while, but then the Reconquista happened.

[... oh right. Things are a little different with a country.]

So no formal education?

[A sheepish expression and a shrug.]

A little? Otherwise...not really. But you should definitely go if you think you'll enjoy it, Rita! It's a good opportunity.

Maybe. I'm not going to make a decision until I've weighed all the pros and cons, though. It's not about my 'enjoyment' of it, but rather what I can 'take' from it, if you get my drift.
