"Miss Lang," Lionel greeted Lana as she entered Lex's study. As usual he was puttering about the wet bar. "Welcome back. I'm sorry to hear that your quest in China was not more fruitful." He offered his condolences in a voice that was a bit too cheerful.

"Where's Lex?" Lana asked ignoring his barb.

Lionel merely smiled at her bluntness. "Lex is refusing to take my advice and give up the search for the stones. His curiosity, I'm afraid, is going to bring him to no good end." Lionel touched his chin reminding himself of Lex's injuries. "Lex should be back soon. I believe he's checking on young Mr. Kent. Can I offer you something? A soft drink? I can call for some tea?"

"You have nothing more I want, Lionel."

Lionel walked around the bar and stood very close to Lana forcing her to look up at him.

"I wouldn't be so sure, Miss Lang. Weren't you the one who said that the only way to solve your problems was to find the stones? I have more information --"

"And I'm to believe that you can help me?" Lana interrupted. "Your information nearly got all of us killed in Shanghai." Lana stepped away from Lionel and sat down on the leather sofa. She arranged herself artfully as a snake might on a sunny rock.

"Are you so sure that it was my help that was the problem, Miss Lang? After all, it was your boyfriend and Lex, who caught the attention of the authorities with their -- indiscretion." The last word implied that something more a search for the stones was going on between Jason and Lex.

Lana only raised a eyebrow at Lionel's attempt to divert her attention to Jason and Lex. Lionel schooled his expression not to reveal his irritation that she hadn't taken the bait.

"And yet none of us ended up with the stone. Such a long, expensive journey for nothing," She taunted him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"We were thoroughly searched, Lionel, before leaving China. None of us had it. I was devastated." Lana's eyes shimmered with crocodile tears.

Lionel was impressed with her ability to look pitiable on demand. It must be a useful skill for bending men to her will. Lex, Jason -- even the Kent boy -- were all eager to jump when ever she called, or even appeared to need saving. How did she fool everyone into believing she was such an innocent? Such a girl could grow into a woman who would be a wonderful ally or a dangerous enemy if she were properly tutored. Perhaps Lionel should consider taking her under his wing.

"I see. And are you certain none of your companions didn't use other means to have the stone smuggled out of China? FedEx delivers worldwide, you know."

Lana smiled waved a hand airily. "And yet, no one's made any deliveries."

"That's unfortunate."

"Isn't it? I was hoping to finally have the upper hand in this struggle for my soul." She laughed in a rather disturbing way. " I'm going to have to find another way to battle the Duchess and Isobel." Lana didn't seem terribly concerned about changing her plans.

'She must know where the stone is,' Lionel thought. "You should be aware that the stones have led to the deaths of others who have sought them out."

"Are you threatening me, Lionel? You should know that I'm nothing like Chloe Sullivan. After all, my parents are dead." Lana had the nerve to laugh.

Lionel did his best to look affronted. "I'm merely stating facts, Miss Lang."

Lana flowed up from the sofa as gracefully as she'd sat down. She placed a well-manicured hand on Lionel's chest. He stopped breathing.

"Ask Lex what happened to him when he tried to stop me, Lionel. I understand you like to play the piano."

She turned away and walked out of the room with all of the grace of high born royalty -- and the flair of a trained courtesan.

When he caught his breath again, Lionel began to revise his plans.
