In November, I went to New York City for the weekend to see the_americanist. We visited the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) with a friend of hers who is an art historian, so she was able to lead directly to interesting pieces and tell us about them -- I highly recommend visiting art museums with art historians :)En novembro, mi veturis al Novjorkurbo por visiti amikon the_americanist dum semajnfino. One of the cool things that was pointed out to us was a few paintings like this. Notice anything that look 15th century-ish? Like, say, the 1970's green background? That's because it's not. Apparently, a number of paintings in the Met were cleaned with a new type of solution which, they didn't realize, continued to disolve away the pigment of the black background after the cleaning was done so, over time, it became green. Here's where I wish I had a better camera. The detail on this small diptych is amazing. Apparently, the tinyness of the detail still astonishes art historians. It certainly impressed me. (Though not enough that I remember who the artist is.)Jen kiam mi deziris pli bonan fotilon. La et-etajn detalojn en ĉi tiu diptiko [dutabula pentraĵo] estas mirinda. Ah, modern art. A sign said no photography of the piece but it said nothing about the label. The name is hilarious, as is the list of materials. (The piece of art is exactly as stated: a dead shark suspended in a transparent tank of formaldehyde.)Ho, moderna arto. Ŝildo indikis ke fotado de la artaĵo ne estas permesita sed ĝi indikis nenion pri fotado de la etikedo. La nomo ridigas min, same la listo de materialoj. (La artaĵo estas ĝuste kiel indikite: morta ŝarko pendita en travidebla ujo de formaldehido.)

I love furniture, but usually things with clean lines, like art deco. But something about this was awesome -- maybe its uniqueness.Mi amegas meblojn, sed plejofte tiujn kun netaj [rektaj] linioj, kiel art deco. Sed io pri ĉi tio estis belega -- eble ĝi unikeco.
The figure on this ancient Greek urn is assumed, by historians, to be depicting someone who was dead, because of the spirit over his head. Isn't it cute?La figuro sur ĉi tiu antikva greka urno estas supozata, de art-historiistoj, esti morta, pro la spirito super lia kapo. Ĉu ne ĝi estas ĉarma?
An animal on an ancient urn, that the_americanist asked me to photograph:Besto sur antikva urno, kiun the_americanist petis ke mi fotu.
The number of pieces depicting Hercules defeating the giant Antaeus (by lifting him away from the earth) is mind-boggling -- numerous paintings, sculptures, plates. And of course I had to snap a picture of the ugliest of them:La kvanto de aĵoj kiuj bildigas la venkon de Herkulo super la homego Anteo (per levigi lin for de la tero) estas nekredebla -- multaj pentraĵoj, skulptaĵoj, teleroj. Kaj kompreneble mi fotis la plej malbelan el ili:
I don't think I'd heard this myth before. Apparently Antaeus was invincible as long as he was in contact with the ground (his mother earth). Hercules discovered this source of his power and realized that he could defeat him by lifting him off the ground and crushing him in a bearhug. Anyway, once this image of Hercules lifting Antaeus was pointed out to me, I really did see it in every section of the museum.Mi ne memoras aŭdi ĉi tiun miton. Ŝajne Anteo estis nevenkebla dum li havis kontakton kun la tero (sia patrino). Herkulo malkovris la fonton de lia potenco kaj elpensis ke li povas venki la homegon per levigi lin el la tero kaj premi lin per brakumego. And the word pinetum (an arboretum specializing in conifers).Ankaŭ la vorton pinetum (arba parkejo kiu enhavas specife koniferoj -- formo de la vorto arboretum sed uzante la anglan vorton por abio, pine). [Laŭ vikipedio, estas vorto arboreto, sed ReVo ne enhavas ĝin. Ĉu do, konifera arboreto?]
