Chapter 5:
“Where am I going?” Mitsuhara asked when Tamamori wheeled her to a side entrance where an ambulance is waiting. Chief Tanaka gave an approval yesterday night.
“Hey! Answer me!” She said with frustration after Tamamori did not answer her.
“You’ll know when you get there.” Tamamori said with a hint of anger.
“Are you mad at me?” Mitsuhara asked.
“Why would I be? I’m just a detective disguising as a doctor to get closer to you.” He said sarcastically.
“You are mad…”
He ignored her as he recalled the conversation he had with Chief Tanaka earlier.
“You will bear all the responsibilities if she escaped while being transported to the hospital. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir.”
“One more thing, I heard you have been frequently visiting Mitsuhara even though it wasn’t necessary.”
“I need to check on her from time to time. She needs to-“
“Well, it’s good that you do that but always remember that if you have any sort of feelings for her, your work here will be done and possibly you will be locked up until she is dead or something.”
Tamamori knew that there would be of no point in arguing with the Chief. So, he just nodded and left the room.
“Ne, you are ignoring me again.” Mitsuhara said when she was being loaded into the ambulance.
“Oh, sorry.” Tamamori said as he sat down in the seat beside the ambulance.
The ambulance drove behind a black car that was being escorted by a policeman on a motorcycle. Another black car was following them with a policeman behind.
“Tamamori sensei, how does having a…family…feels like?”
“You ARE weird…At times you would talk to me; at times you would push me away and show me the door.”
“I…” Mitsuhara was interrupted by the screeching of tires as the ambulance came to a sudden halt.
“What happened?” Tamamori asked the driver.
“We are being surrounded!” the driver said. He tried to say something into the receiver but he shot before he managed to do so.
“Driver-san!” Tamamori called out. Within a few minutes, the windows of the back door of the ambulance were shattered due another gunshot.
Tamamori was shocked as he saw a hand trying to open the door handle through the window.
The door was opened and two men wearing black ski mask stood by the door. Both of them were having guns with them. A man that is slightly taller than the other walked into the ambulance.
He pointed the gun towards Tamamori at first. Then, he changed his target and pointed to the direction of Mitsuhara’s head.
Mitsuhara tried to inch away but her body is tightly bound to the bed. The man pulled the trigger.
“No!!” Tamamori yelled as he tried to block the bullet by covering Mitsuhara’s head with his body as a human shield.
“Tamamori sensei!!” Mitsuhara yelled as Tamamori’s limped body fell onto her. The bullet hit his right shoulder and his white coat is slowly tainted by the dark red colour of his blood.
“Kazuya nande? Nande??” Mitsuhara lifted her head and asked the man.
“Yukari, let’s go, okay?” the man said. “I’ll remove the hand-cuffs and bring you somewhere safe to hide you.” He said again as he shoot the hand-cuffs.
“Hide? Why do you need to hide me?”
“I’ll explain it to you later, okay?” He said and pulled her up gently. “Why? What’s wrong?” The man asked her after Mitsuhara stood still, not wanting to leave.
“I can’t leave him. I can’t leave him like this.”
“Don’t you love me?”
“No…it’s not that. I just…” She paused and looked at Tamamori who was groaning in pain.
“You’ve changed, Yukari. You’re not the Yukari I know anymore.” Kazuya said as he let go of her hand. “I’ll tell you this information as a respect to the relationship we once had; your father is ordering people to kill you. Goodbye…I wouldn’t be that nice the next time I see you.” He said again as he exited the ambulance door and took one last look at her before leaving hurriedly after that.
“Father…?”
