I am very sad to report that Kookie Buki, better known as Boo, died very peacefully in his sleep between the hours of 4:30 and 7 am Today, Friday, September 28, 2007.
Boo was a very active, friendly, loving finch. Born at the end of July, 2006, he was found crying, injured, and too young to have any feathers on a sidewalk behind Musso & Frank's famous resturant in Hollywood, CA.
Immediately Boo became the darling of Hollywood Boulevard, which he visited daily. He was a friendly, outgoing bird who loved attention. He particularly loved watching Sesame Street, and Elmo was his favorite--this may be due in part to having been given a small stuffed Elmo to sleep with when he was still a hatchling.
He was a true miracle. We were told by everyone--bird experts, vets, pet shop owners, the autobahn society--that he would never survive the day, or on the outside, the week. No little wild bird that young could survive. When he was 7 months old, we took him to a bird specialist, in practice for over 17 years. She'd never seen anything like him.
Boo traveled all over the country, surviving a disasterous trip to Buffalo, then staying for 6 weeks in Virginia while I was in Oregon. He flew home safe to Oregon and has lived here happily ever since, befriending the family cat and drawing a circle of little wild-birdie friends out on the porch, where he loved to sit and sing for hours on end.
He showed no signs of illness except being unusually clingy over the past week. He wanted to be held almost all the time. And I obliged. He died very peacefully, curled up almost like a kitten, which is how he always slept. No ruffled feathers, no signs of a struggle.
Miracles happen--I had one with me for a year and a half. He will be missed, now and always.
Mommy loves you, Boo.
