Sometimes I wonder about people

My company has a pretty easy return policy.
Things can be returned within 90 days for most things.
Some can only be returned within 45. Like electronics,
cameras, DVDS and stuff like vaccumms. After that you
need to contact the manufacture for repair or replacement.
Items with a copyright have to be unopened or you can only
exchange them. That's government law...it applies to all
retail companies.

Most returns are done with a receipt, but if you don't have
one we can look it up with the form of payment.  If you used
a credit card, debit card, check or even a gift card that you
still have, we can attempt to look it up.

Returns that are over the 45/90 day limits or we can't find in the system
are more difficult. We can use a Government ID to do a return, but it will give
you the lowest price in the last 90 days.  You can only do $70 in twelve months
with an ID as well.  After that amount we can only do an exchange for equal amount.
If the item is no longer in our system with a price,  we can't do much at all.

Woman brings in a baby swing. Back in March she got it as a shower gift.
Her first one stopped working so she exchanged it.  The second one stopped
working she said.  She wanted to exchange or refund it.  She didn't have a
receipt.  It had been so long the item wasn't even in our stores anymore.
I looked it up and it had been clearanced out at $38.98.  I told her I could
give her a gift card for that amount.  She threw a fit.  She wanted full price.
I explained the policy, but she wasn't having it.  I called my supervisor who
told her the same thing.  She demanded to talk to a manager.  He asked her
if she had a receipt which she didn't.  So he told her it was a gift card for the
amount I told her or nothing.  He was nice about it.  She wasn't.  We gave her
a phone number for home office.  She called them and got the same answer.
The manager was listening to her talking to the home office. She accused him
of making faces at her.  She demanded to talk to the store manager.  He wasn't
in the store.  She demanded his home phone number.  Well, she wasn't going
to get that. She yelled that she wasn't leaving till she got what she wanted.
My manager told her she would be there all day then and walked away.

She got back on her phone to talk to somebody she knew.  Another guest walked up.
I asked the new guest to go down to another register so I could help her.  The
angry guest yelled she wasn't moving.  I told her I was talking to the other lady.
The angry guest turned around and yelled that we would only cheat her and refuse
to refund her money.  The second lady looked shocked, but didn't say anything.
As I helped the second lady, I said I was sorry about all of this.  I finished the return
and the second lady thanked me.  The angry lady finally left when we began to ignore her.
She hasn't been back so hopefully she never will.

Monday,  a lady said she had purchased two pieces of furniture and was not happy
with them.  I asked for her receipt which she had.  She bought the furniture 12/31/2011.
I explainded her receipt had expired.  I looked up the items and we didn't even have
anything in the system about them since it was so long ago.  I couldn't even give her
a gift card for the last price since it didn't even come up.  She kept on asking me to give
her something. Seriously, furniture like these are flat packed and we do not build them.
We have no control over how she might have put them together.

I called a manager.  The manager explained we couldn't do anything about that
purchase because it was way past the time limit.  She kept demanding we do something
for her.  Finally the manager offered her 20% off a new item just to get her to leave.  She
went back and didn't find any furniture she wanted.  I called the manager again who told
her she could have the discount off another item.  She brought up a baby gym that cost
about $75.  We gave her the discount and she left.

A man brought in a WII game that was opened.  He had a receipt for it.  I pointed out that
the receipt stated same item exchange if opened.  He didn't like the game and wanted a
different one or his money back.  I explained again why I couldn't do that.  A manager
happened to walk up and overheard the whole thing.  He backed me up.  The guy got
mad and said WMT would give him a different game or his money back.  Uh, no they would
not do that.  It's government laws.

When I was relieved at the end of my shift, I warned my replacement about the man.  She
said he had called a few days before about the return.  She had explained the policy to him.
She said he called back about an hour later changing his story a bit to see if the answer
would be different.  Retail really brings out the crazies.
